Obituary - Dave Griffiths - President Porthcawl DBC |
Dave Griffiths - a personal friend, and the most affable and friendly tournament director that any club would wish for.
Dave was originally a Manxman, but his roots were in Pembroke. Having met Bronwen, they embarked on an RAF 'service' life, undertaking duties both in the UK and abroad, in particular in Germany. We were recently on holiday with Dave and Bron and every evening Dave would regale us with an amusing anecdote about his service life.
They settled down in Porthcawl over 25 years ago and brought a different style of bridge to our tables - I still don't understand his 'Vienna Club' system. Dave was highly instrumental in the instigation of the Awel y Mor bridge club, formed out of the original Porthcawl Club, and he became its first Chairman. He encouraged members to participate in this new club, whose emphasis was on playing bridge in a friendly and congenial manner - the way bridge should be played - and it was not uncommon to boast a 16+ table attendance on Saturday evenings.
Ten years ago the club re-merged with the Porthcawl club (economies of joint equipment and joint membership), and he was popularly elected the President of the Porthcawl Club in 2008.
His Thursday night partnership with Richard, and more latterly with myself on a Saturday night, were a thrill a minute, in translating from the 'Griffith's Strong Club' to a more sober Benji Acol. It was my pleasure and honour to have played with him.
Dave's other major interests were rugby (armchair), and jazz, but foremost he was a family man, nearly every day giving open house to his children and grandchildren.
Our deepest sympathies to Bron, his four children, and seven grand-children - he will be sadly missed.
Tony

Christmas Party Winners 2008 |
The Christmas party was held at The Rest Hotel Porthcawl on Thursday 18th December.
We had a lovely meal, the wine flowed and 'fun' bridge followed. Our thanks must go to Barrie who ensured the efficient collection of our meals and to Tony who arranged the play that night. North/ South stayed put and East moved one table at a time whilst West moved two. All went smoothly and a good time was had by all.
Here's a photo of the winners of the Kathleen Chalke salver on the night - Sid, Phyllis, Tricia & Megan together with Barrie who presented the salver.
