Bridge is a world wide activity, but wherever you play, you will be expected to abide by some simple standards.
At our club:
-
We expect individuals to be respectful to others.
-
We are a social club, so introduce yourselves to those you don’t know. We try to make everyone feel welcome.
-
Try to help the play, for example, place played tricks correctly to facilitate counting, don´t touch the cards or speak when you are dummy, etc.
-
Mobile phones are a fact of modern life but do not make or take calls during play.
-
Follow the rules of bridge.
We follow the English Bridge Union (EBU) Rules which are available as a paper document or on the web( www.ebu.co.uk).The purpose of these rules are to ensure:
-
All players and officials can enjoy their game.
-
The proceedings are fair, comprehensible and considerate of other players.
-
The game is played according to agreed standards.
Most of our players use the “Five Card Majors and Strong No-trumps” system. Other systems are allowed but remember to tell each new set of players the basics of your system. Variations on the systems should be stated as you bid in English, for example “could be short or 12 to 14” are commonly heard at the table.
We are a cosmopolitan group and English is the common language. All talking during bidding and play should be in English.
If the rules are broken the Tournament Director (TD), should be called immediately. Raised voices are not part of our etiquette system. Infringement of the rules includes, bidding out of turn, revoking, cheating in any form, disagreement over the number of tricks made etc. IN ALL CASES THE TD SHOULD BE CALLED AS SOON AS THE DISAGREEMENT BECOMES APPARENT.
If you are seated North, make certain;
-
You know how to operate the bridgemate, or let your partner do it.
-
The rright people are seated correctly at the table.
The boards to be played are the same numbers as the boards specified on. the Bridgemate. Boards may on occasions be played out of order. In this case. cancel the board number on the Bridgemate and add the new number from the board. The Bridgemate will query this and the answer is “yes” if it is correct.
-
Check the board is correctly oriented (North faces North) before you remove the cards, and before the cards are returned to the board.
From time to time the “TD” will issue buletins drawing your attention to various aspects of the rules. It is
important to take note of these bulletins which appear on our WhatsApp group because they draw attention to mistakes recently made in play.
These bulletins will be added to this document.
ENJOY YOUR GAME
