Etiquette
Bridge is a “passport” to anywhere in the world. It is played in the
majority of countries and the Rules and Regulations are set by the
governing body - The World Bridge Federation (WBF). These rules
and regulations are filtered down to designated regions around the
world. The region covering our domain is the European Bridge
League (EBL). Countries within the region each have their own
affiliated National Bridge Organisations (NBO) which govern and
control the activities of their own National events down to Club level.
It is through this structure that affiliated Clubs can operate within the
NBO, abiding by the rules and etiquette as laid down by the governing
bodies.
At present, our Club is not affiliated to any NBO, but may do so at
some time in the future. Hence, for the time being, there is no
membership fee to belong to our Club.
However, we do apply and abide by the rules and etiquette observed
by the English Bridge Union (EBU). Recognising the fact that, as with
so many other Clubs, this is a social bridge club and we do allow a
degree of relaxing of the rules. But etiquette must be fully observed
and adhered to.
At the start of a round greet the opponents to your table in a warm
and friendly manner. As a matter of respect to all other players, your
mobile phone should be switched off unless, in extenuating
circumstances, you may be expecting an emergency call. Check that
you have the correct opponents and boards. You should also
announce the basic system that you are playing to your opponents.
All other system bids must be alerted as laid down by the Rules of
Bridge.
Good behaviour should be observed at all times. If you feel that
etiquette has been breached, please call the Tournament Director who
will apply any remedial action as set down in the official Rule Book.
If there has been a breach of the rules, the Tournament Director must
be called. This may include a bid out of turn, play out of turn, revoke,
or any other misdemeanour. This should be done in an amiable
fashion. Arbitrary resolution of any breach of the rules is not tolerated
as it may have implications on the result at the table and also affect
the overall result of that board.
It is most important that you should enjoy the game and ensure the
same level of enjoyment for your opponents and your partner.
