WBU/BBO Tournaments

These events are for WBU members and their guests. Master points will be issued, and the entry fee will be BBO$2.50. There is no better way to spend a lockdown winter afternoon!
Do join us and make this a popular event.
Note - on order to play it is essential that you pre-register with BBO/WBU (you only need to do this once) so that you are on the 'BBO List'.To join the tournament, search for ‘wbu_1’ on BBO (click Competitive All Touranments).
To see if you are already registered, please view the BBO User Names, otherwise please register by email to WBU Admin providing the following details: ‘BBO User-name’; ‘First Name’; ‘Surname’; ‘WBU/NBO Number’ (this information will not be available to other members).

Mid Glam Bridge Club On Line

Can you please let all your club members know that any members of Porthcawl, Bridgend, The Vale, Pencoed and Old Hall clubs who would like to play on a Thursday night in the MidGlam Online club sessions are invited to do so.  To join the group, they need to email their StepBridge usernames to me at otherwise they will not be able to see the event in the events list.

Note also that the event is on Stepbridge, so you will need to register for Stepbrige if you have not done so already.

Porthcawl Virtual Club

Porthcawl Bridge Club (Virtual) is opening on the StepBridge platform

The Porthcawl Club will now re-open using the StepBridge platform. We shall be starting on Monday July 6th., and every Monday thereafter (until we resume F2F bridge).

Play will commence at 6.45 pm., but it is important that players are registered for the tournament (i.e. in the tournament lobby) by 6.35 pm. latest.

For the first night we shall play 18 boards, but it is hoped to subsequently run 21 board sessions (with a 5-minute break after 15 boards).

There will be no table money charge.

The events are notionally set-up under the Porthcawl name, but in principle it will be open to any players in the Bridgend District (interpret that as you will) or outside this area if partnering local player, so all of the players will be familiar 'faces' to you (not if they're wearing masks).

I shall be Directing for the first two weeks (and hence cannot play), but I would hope to train others for a rota of subsequent 'club nights'.

StepBridge gives us great flexibility regarding round timings etc. - my aim is to ensure that all players complete all boards (not necessarily the case with national events played on any platform). You won't suddenly be thrown-off your board when after 11 tricks you are about to make your 4S*.

- you must be registered with StepBridge (this is not the same as registering for the tournament). To register, visit, and then following your submission you will receive (eventually) an email containing your login name and password (some players with hotmail accounts have experienced difficulty in receiving the email). I would suggest that you register by Saturday 4th. July latest. If you have any registration difficulties Chris Rawlings is prepared to assist you via Team Viewer (i.e he will take over your computer!!)

- having registered I strongly recommend that you participate in a StepBridge event (the WBU run friendly tournaments on Sundays and Wednesdays - if these are not convenient please contact myself or Chris Rawlings who could set-up a casual tournament for practice).

- when you have registered, please send me your username, so that I can register you as a 'Club Member' (even if you don't intend to play immediately). If you are not a 'Club Member' you will not be allowed to participate in our club nights.

By the middle of next week I shall send all 'Club members' a brief on how to register for our club night tournaments, and also a guide as to how to get the best out of StepBridge - covering some of the finer points (this will also be posted on the Club and WBU websites).

You will be able to tournament register for the first night, any time after Saturday 4th. On the activity list, click on our tournament; click 'Info'; provide you partner's name (not your own - the software knows who you are). When  they log-in they will be invited to partner you in the tournament. Then at 6.45 (ish) you will be presented with your first board.

Hope to see you on Monday 6th.

All the best

Charity Challenge Simultaneous Pairs Run by ECATS

Now – I appreciate that your club may not be playing bridge online, but … if you are please consider joining us for this year’s Charity Challenge Simultaneous Pairs. In the past this was just held on a Thursday but this year we are going to be running it for a week, starting on Monday 15 March through to Friday 19th – different hands each day of course.

We also have clubs running “open” heats where visitors are welcomed, so if some of your members play online perhaps they would like to join one of those and I would really appreciate it if you could let them know about it. Or of course, if they don’t want to play they can still donate by going to our website … all contributions very gratefully received!

All the details, including those of the Open heats, how to send in the money and so forth are on the website, where we have created special pages about the event at :

As you will see, we are going to split the resulting funds between two Charities this time – Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. Both have been hit incredibly hard by the pandemic, unable to open their shops, do street collections or anything else to raise awareness of the need for funding so anything we raise is going to be a big bonus for them.

We don’t yet know whether Bridge Club Live will be able to hold heats – it is an enormous extra amount of work for them to set it up, and we do understand if they are unable to do so, but RealBridge and BBO is absolutely fine.

Please – come and take up the Challenge and let’s see how much we can raise for these two wonderful Charities!

With very best wishes – stay well, stay safe and let’s look forward to better times ahead!
