OXSHOTT BRIDGE CLUB

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE FOR 2018 AGM

The club activities for the year 2017/2018 are provided below and any comments or views from the membership would be welcomed, preferably in advance of the AGM so that we can get the formal business finished quickly.

As a novice Chairman, I am very grateful for the help and support that I have received from the whole Committee, and from you, the Membership.

Most of our work is the same routine from year to year, but this year has been dominated by the dreaded Data Protection legislation.  Peter Wardle and Janet Kefford have spent a huge amount of time in understanding what was required, and on its implementation.  I and the whole of the Committee are greatly indebted to them both.

We were very happy that Mike Sadler and Philip Goldenberg successfully completed the Directors Course.  Two new Directors relieve the pressure on our existing pool of Vernon Morton, Rowena Austin and Kevin Goddard and we are grateful to them all.

Membership

Currently our membership stands at 121, but we anticipate that several older members will not re-join because they are no longer happy to drive in the dark.

Website

The unusual format of our website is the envy of many clubs.  Mike Sadler has continued to keep his high standard of amusing or thought-provoking news items, while Peter Wardle very efficiently keeps the necessary information up-to-date.

Finance

The finances of the club remain strong but the Village Hall Committee have spent a lot of money on improvements to the building during the past year and, inevitably, they have had to increase our rent.   In addition, there has been a slight decrease in average attendance on Wednesday nights.  We have to keep a close eye on our revenue stream and the Committee regretfully decided to recommend an increase in the annual subscription to £15 per year.  This will not come into effect until October 2019 at the earliest and will be the first increase for ten years. The majority of our members are happy to receive club information by email, and this obviously keeps stationery costs down.

Our thanks go to Richard Burgess for his long tenure as Treasurer - and to Jonathan Spring for being our Auditor for many years.

Competitions

Our club competition winners are as follows:

Club Teams

Winners:        Mike Mulligan/Elisa Money,  Renate Lane/Jonathan Spring

Runners up:  Philip Goldenberg/Dave Bowen,  Katherine Kreuter/Dave Cowell

Tilling Trophy

Winners:        Kevin and Deanne Goddard

Runners up:  Elisa Money and Mike Mulligan

Individual

Winner:          Jonathan Spring

Runner up:    Renate Lane

As usual, we will be giving vouchers as prizes equating to either a year’s free membership or free evenings, according to the competition.

Surrey League

Richard Burgess, Philip Duncan, Deanne and Kevin Goddard have been our team in the Surrey League and in the Lady Rose Knockout Cup for many years and have had considerable success.  They would now like a break from the League.  If any other pair or team would like to have a turn representing the Club, please speak to any member of the committee.  Additionally, any team of four can apply to enter the next Lady Rose Cup, alongside our current team, when the new session begins.

Committee

Jonathan Spring has tendered his resignation from the Committee.  We all see the work that he does every week with the Bridgemates, which he will continue to do temporarily, but he has also been an invaluable member of the Committee for six years, as well as our Auditor.  We will miss him greatly, but are fortunate that Tony Scott and Peter Wardle have been able assistants on the Bridgemates and are able to take over.

This does mean that we have a vacancy on the Committee and we would welcome “new blood” and any nominations from members.  The rest of the committee are prepared to serve for the coming year; my thanks to them all, Janet Kefford (Hon.Secretary), Richard Burgess (Hon.Treasurer), Jonathan Spring (resigning), Peter Wardle, Gillian Lowe, Philip Duncan and Katherine Kreuter.

Finally our thanks go to Mrs Griffiths, our reliable and efficient tea lady.

Daphne Pugh (Chairman)
