PROs AND CONs from BD72
New Video Series about Bidding

Our partner, bid72, has started a new video series called Pros and Cons.

In each video, a bridge champion weighs the pros and cons of challenging bidding decisions.

They take you by the hand (ha, hand) and guide you through their way of thinking.

In episode no. 1, the brilliant Zia Mahmood discusses a high-level dilemma.

In case you’re not familiar with bid72, they’re a free app

the ACBL has partnered with for the weekly ABC - ACBL Bidding Contest.

(You can read more about it in the Bidding Box section of the Bridge Bulletin.)

Bridge Refresher - Cards Before Paperwork

Law 41 requires the opening lead to be made face-down.

Before the lead is made, the leader’s partner and the presumed declarer may require a review of the auction or clarification of an opponent’s call.

The opening lead should then be made before recording the contract in the Bridgemate or a personal score sheet.

Once the lead has been made, the dummy is faced. This allows the declarer time to form a plan of play while players enter paperwork.

This will help with pace of play and comply with the Laws.

Importance of the Convention Card

An essential aspect of duplicate bridge is the convention card.

As per ACBL rules, each partnership should complete identical convention cards to clarify their agreed conventions and carding systems.

A completed convention card also serves as a reference for opponents upon request,

allowing them to understand the conventions and carding systems you may be using.  Bridge is a game of full disclosure,

and every bid you make must be accompanied by clear information so that your opponents can fully understand its meaning.

With this in mind, we require that at least one player of an established partnership have a completed convention card during play.

If assistance is needed in completing one, please seek guidance—support will be provided as necessary.

If a partnership does not have a completed convention card, they will be required to play using the yellow SAYC convention card.
