Pat Mullally has written a few words.
David Ferguson Spalding 5th June 1945 - 20th June 2025
A little bit of happiness, joy and laughter left this world when David Ferguson Spalding passed away recently.
I’m Patrick Gabriel Mullally, David’s friend, bridge partner and opponent. I have known David and his family for over 35 years. This gentleman always “bore the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” with perseverance and determination, often telling me “How sweet life is”, in spite of personal ill health and suffering.
In David Spalding, I have found an intelligential, kind and truthful companion who, had a ready smile and a keen wit. Chatting with him, you would never expect a dull or short answer to a question. Any response would come with a story that would take you to a different time or place and perfectly encapsulate the atmosphere, emotion and nub of the matter in hand.
His contribution to the world of bridge in North Wales was enormous. David his wife Catherine and son Mark have acted in senior committee roles in three clubs. Together with Catherine they represented the ABC Cymru, Caernarfon and Ynys Mon bridge clubs within the North Wales Bridge Association, and through that body attended the Welsh Bridge Union (W. B. U.), often travelling to Mid or South Wales to champion issues of concern to the grass roots of the game. Their contribution was recognised in North Wales when the Wartski Cup was renamed the Catherine Spalding Cup the competition being held annually.
However, it must be remembered that David’s main priority was always his family. He became a good bridge player as he accompanied Catherine and Mark, playing at home as a social activity and progressing to Club Bridge and on to National Competitions. David developed his ability as a Bridge Director earning a recognised regional reputation as a correct and fair arbiter of the game. Both he and Mark still retain the top and second spot in the rankings in the local Clubs of ABC Cymru and Ynys Mon. His attitude, knowledge, skill and understanding of the game marked him out as a player to be reckoned with. A mutual friend, now an international player, well known in W. B. U. circles would comment to opponents that they had been “Spaldinged”, after competing against them in National green pointed events.
David Spalding was a humorous, family man and fun loving individual, he “took arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing, ended them”. He lived his life with honesty and integrity but finally succumbed to illness after many years of suffering. I am proud to have been able to call him my friend, and I shall miss him.
Patrick G. Mullally
Chair ABC Cymru.
