Report by Mark Goddard.

Warwickshire traditionally have the most strength in depth of all the counties, so a particular congratulations to the Porter Team for getting a draw. The best performing pair on the butler imp were Margaret and Peter, and special mention must go to Patrick (comfortably our youngest player) and Pravin for their performance stepping up to the first team.

Also, thank you to Tony Sowter for once again helping in the debrief which was held after the match.

Board 2

There were a fair few slams in this match – some bid, some not. The first arose on Board 2:

The above was the auction at my table. The 3S showed a super accept, but not as good a hand as a 2NT or 3 of a suit bid would show. Whilst North has a good hand, it requires a lot to make slam, so  signs off in 4S.

The slam was bid at four tables – unfortunately 3 times by Warwickshire (once in each match). It needs both the club on side and getting the diamonds right – unfortunately everything was in the right place. A moral victory for those not bidding it, but imps in for those who did.

Board 10

Not the most elegant auction, but one which got Richard and I reached. One point to note is that 2C was forcing to at least 2NT, so Richard could bid 2H. A much better contract is 6C or 6NT by West as it protects the diamond position. 5C as opposed to 4NT would give the opportunity to find that – with the control heavy hand West can bid 5NT (pick a contract – West cannot be strong enough to be looking for a grand after the 4H bid), over which North should bid 6C with KQx.

Of course, we had an easy ride in that South did not bid. I think a 1S bid is clear (some people may bid 2H) and it makes it more difficult to get to slam.

Board 21

Last slam hand for this report. Slam was bid twice – once at my table (against us) when a very long strong club relay sequence reached the excellent 6D, and once where the less good 6NT was made.

The auction shown is one way to get there with a non-strong club system. The 2D bid is often played as negative or waiting. The 2NT bid shows 23+ with 3C being stayman. Over the negative response, West knows that East must have something in the minors and so bids 4D as a slam try. Over this East has an easy accept (East’s other options are four of a major as a cue and 4NT as natural and non-forcing (very important – it is not blackwood in this sequence)).

A note on the play. The contract is cold when the diamonds break. However, when they do not, declarer should eliminate all Hearts (first) and Spades and then play a diamond. South is then endplayed to lead away from the club queen.

Board 22

Board 22 resulted in a mix of results and discussion at the debrief. At some tables, 1D got passed out. At others there was 1NTx (that depends on what NT you are playing) and 4S. Assuming a standard weak NT, the above is the way I think the auction should proceed. A key point is that South is definitely worth an overcall of 1S and after that North should drive to game.
