Add Time to Last Round

If time is about to run out on the last board, it is better to increase time to play than let it cut off the hand.  It is hard to adjust the score if need be while it is calculating the results.  In a team match it is also better to let the penultimate round run to conclusion to make sure the final matches are correct.  To add time, Edit the tournament, click on Format, and add time to the minutes per board.

Adjust Score

The score must be adjusted when time runs out and people are still playing.  Often times BBO will adjust the score automatically.  It is a good idea to double-check when that happens to make sure it was adjusted correctly.  A good strategy is to use Tournament Status to see who is still playing when the round is down to the last few minutes.  Occasionally there may be a number of pairs till playing, in which case you can edit the tournament to add time to the minutes per board to extend the round (be sure to edit it back after the round ends).  Usually there are only one or two tables still playing, in which case you can write down their contracts and monitor their play.  You can then use Player Results when they get cut off, select that board, and examine their play.

If the contract is clear-cut, assign the obvious score.  By clear-cut, I mean a hand that is practically a claim; at most, a marked finesse, or a hand that is inevitable, such as one where a 3-2 split in trumps is needed and is received.

If not clear-cut, normally you will assign Ave/Ave.  However, if there are many tricks to play, you can now look at Table History.  This goes into (excruciating) detail showing every hand including how much time each pair used.  If one pair used the preponderance of time, assign them Ave- and their opponents Ave+.

Multi-Section Games

The ACBL is now allowing multi-section games.  When we run a limited game within 30 minutes of an open game, the open game can now get credit for the tables in the limited game.  To do this, edit the open game, go to the description, and add the hack +LT=n+, where n is the number of tables in the limited game (round up for half tables).  This must be done before the open game ends.

Robots

The robots are here!  You can now replace a sitout with a robot.  Go to the table with a sitout, right-click on a sitout, choose "Substitute - select", and replace "sitout" with "robot".  I prefer any substitute for open games, but robots may be better for limited games.  If you are having problems finding a sub, or you have a single player on the partnership desk, you can use a robot until a sub can be found.

Robot pairs are now ineligble.  They will place, but won't be awarded points.  I suggest letting the robots compete in the open games, but awarding humans an Ave and the robots an Ave-minus for limited games.

Be careful about adding a robot for a missing player in the last round.  BBO awards points to whoever is playing the last round, so the player who was replaced will get no points.  It's better to let people sit out on the last round than have someone miss out on their points.

Messages

When you sign on with the vacb187690 code to direct a game, look at the Messages tab on the right.  If there is a number in red on the tab, there are messages waiting for the director.

Click on the Messages tab and select Mail at the top to see them.

Tournament Setup

Tournaments are normally set up with the following codes in the description (these are case sensitive):

  • +allavail+ - holds up the tournament until everyone is available.  Go to the tournament and select "Unregister offline teams" if someone is holding up play.  If the game still doesn't start, edit the tournament and remove this code (someone registered but started playing in another tournament).
  • +howell+ - allows the running of a Howell
  • +hm18+ - automatically does a Howell with 6 or fewer tables and a Mitchell with 7 or more and it computes the correct number of boards per round.  You must remove this to play anything but 18 boards
  • +MPLIMIT=nnn+ - to limit the game to nnn points

Here are my recommendations for editing the tournament based on the number of tables:

Tables Actions
3 Set boards to 20, boards per round to 4, remove +hm18+
3.5-4.5 Do nothing and you will automatically get a Howell with 3 boards per round
5-6 Do nothing and you will automatically get a Howell with 2 boards per round, you may want to use 8 minutes per board
6.5-8 Do nothing and you will automatically get a Mitchell with 3 boards per round
8.5-11 Edit the tournament to 2 boards a round, you may want to use 8 minutes per board
11.5-17 Edit the tournament to 3 boards a round, add the +SECTIONSIZE=9+ code, and remove the +howell+ and +hm18+ codes. You will get two sections playing 6 3-board rounds.
17.5-26 Edit the tournament to 2 boards a round and remove the +howell+ and +hm18+ codes and you may want to use 8 minutes per board. You will get 2 sections playing 9 2-board rounds.
26.5-39 Edit the tournament to 2 boards a round, add the +SECTIONSIZE=13+ code, and remove the +howell+ and +hm18+ codes. You will get 3 sections playing 9 2-board rounds.
39+ Dance a happy jig

The biggest problem with this is when someone signs on at the (literal) last minute and changes your category. Just be aware of this and do the best you can.

Signing-on to Virtual Games

It appears they have a new policy for our virtual games.  If you try to find the game, it will only show you clubs where you are eligible to play.

If someone can’t find our game, tell them to go back to the home page and select “Virtual Clubs” and then “All Clubs”.

Adding a member

Adding a member:

  1. Go to the People tab and slide the button to Show Offline
  2. See if they are already there, if not put their BBO name in Add Friend and Add them
  3. To make sure they are included in your tournament; Edit the tournament, make a trivial change, and click on Modify Tournament.  A yellow box should appear saying the tournament is modified.
Record Results

A word document describing how to post BBO results to Bridgewebs is available at Post BBO Results to Bridgewebs.pdf.

Note: If you enter results with the BBO tab before attaching the pdf file with the Attach tab, then you have to use the Amend tab to add the pdf.

Guest Policy

The ACBL has a new guest policy for virtual games.  This policy says that a guest can be added to the games.  I have put a description of this policy on our website in the Online Games section.

I suggest the following procedure:

  1. The regular player will have to inform the director via chat of their intention to play with a guest and provide the guest’s BBO name.  This should be done at least 15 minutes before game time.
  2. The director decides at their discretion whether or not to add the guest.  The decision can be made based on whether or not the request was made in a timely fashion and on the number of guests already playing.
  3. If the director decides to add the guest; they go to the People tab, move the Show Offline slider to the right, and does Add Friend with the guest BBO name.
  4. You then have to modify the tournament, if only trivially.
  5. After the game begins, the guest must be removed.  To remove someone, go to the People tab and select Show Offline.  Select the person you want to remove and change Relationship to Neutral.  Move the slider back to show online people, and then back to Show Offline to refresh the screen.  The person should be gone.

Howell Movements

There is a new tournament code I am starting to add to tournaments.  The +hm18+ code in addition to the +howell+ code automatically creates either a Howell movement or Mitchell movement of 18 boards depending on the number of tables, Howell if 6 tables or fewer.  If you decide to use more than 18 boards, remove this code.  Also remove this code if you have more than 15 tables or BBO won't create more than one section.

Problem with +allavail+

One pair registered for both the 750 game and the open game.  This prevented the open game from starting because the pair was already playing.  We couldn’t unregister them because they were online.  I found out the solution was to remove the +allavail+ code from the description of the tournament.
