PERRY’S FRIDAY WORKSHOP

Perry’s next workshop will be Friday, Oct 25th on: Interfering with the Opponents’ No Trump.  Try and recall how many times the opponents opened 1NT and it was your turn to bid, but you felt stuck, with nothing to bid?  On the other hand, when the contract ended, it was clear that you and your partner could easily have played a partial or full game contract, or better still, prevented your opponents from finding their contract, if you just knew what to bid!!
So how in Heaven’s name do we bid after a 1NT opening by the opponents?
Find out when and how to interfere this Friday!  Starts at 9:30 am, cost $10.

BUILDING FUND

The mission of the North Orlando Bridge Academy is to use the wonderful game of bridge as an educational tool for youth and senior adults. The Academy offers lessons for players of all levels, and offers a friendly environment for enjoying our great game. Currently, the Academy rents space at the Maitland Civic Center at the cost of over $5,500 per month. The lack of a permanent home puts the pressure of incremental rental costs on club games, classes, youth bridge activities, and sectionals. With a dedicated building, the Academy could offer more games, classes, and activities for the enjoyment of bridge players in the Orlando area and to promote our great game.

The Academy is launching a Building Fund with the goal of raising $750,000 for a permanent home. Because the North Orlando Bridge Academy is a 501(c)(3) corporation, donations to the Academy are tax deductible*. Players and members are encouraged to make a tax deductible donation.  Proper receipts will be issued for all donations for tax return purposes.  Additionally, talk to your financial advisers about including a charitable deduction to the Academy in your estate planning. Please pass along this message to friends who may be interested in making a contribution to promote our great game for the benefit of current and future players.   Remember, some donations may also be matched by your employer.  Donations should be made payable the North Orlando Bridge Academy, Inc.

*A copy of the official registration and financial information may be obtained from the Florida Division of Consumer Services by calling 800-435-7352.  Registration does not imply endorsement, approval or recommendation by the state.

MEMBERSHIP ROSTER

Did you know that if you are an NOBC Member, you may have access to a Membership Roster with member’s rank, master points and phone numbers?  It is available on our website under the Membership button.  [Note: You must have a valid e-mail address on file with us to access this.  If you don’t, send us an e-mail and we will add it.]  The first time that you use the "Members Only" area, enter your e-mail address and click [Set/Reset Password].  It will send you an e-mail allowing you to establish a password with which to log in.

To view the list, you must log in and click on the “Member List” tab.  You can search the list or scroll through all the names.  Click on the Account tab on this page to update your information or if you wish to opt out of displaying your information in the list.  We encourage all members to review and correct their information as it easily becomes out of date.

COMING WITHOUT A PARTNER

Our bridge center guarantees a partner for any player who arrives without a partner but here is how it works: A player will first be paired with another player who also arrives without a partner. The next pairing will be with a designated “Fill-in” player. As a final option, the director may be available to play*. The director will make these assignments. Every effort is made to establish a partnership that considers all relevant circumstances. However, any player who is paired with another player, but refuses the partnership forfeits the guarantee of a playing partner.

*Note: When there are two large sections (over 15 tables total in both sections), the director is not permitted to play. This has been our policy since we began the club.

2020 BRIDGE CRUISE

The Sectional cruise offered by Brett Ramsey in March of 2020 is looking good with 74 players right now with many coming from our club and from Deland.  There are still 6 spots open but if you are interested, be sure to contact Brett before November 1st to get his group rates, as the prices will be much higher after that.  Brett offers many of these cruises from different ports, generally 2-3 a year, and does this full-time so everything runs very smoothly.

This is an 8-day cruise out of Fort Lauderdale on March 14-22 of 2020.  It is on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas and visits Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.   Lynn Berg who directed the cruise in 2018 will direct the games and she'll also be offering lessons on board as well.  This is a Sectional at Sea offering silver points, with prices starting at $1189 per person, and that includes your cruise fare, all taxes and fees, pre-paid gratuities, and all bridge games and lessons.  Flyers and additional information are available via Brett’s website, bridge-cruise.com

Let Glen Martin know if you are interested in going.
