Monday format poll
Poll - Monday morning format

Over recent weeks we have experimented with running Monday morning as a single section, rather than stratifying into a Green (more experienced) and Blue (less experienced) sections.

Here's your chance to express an opinion. Please fill in the form and submit,

A little background information. With two sections, pairs select where they would prefer playing. In that way they mainly play against pairs of similar level and experience.

With one section, everyone is in together, providing a 'collegiate' atmosphere. A movement called a "Web Mitchell" is utilized: nine 3-board rounds, and everyone plays the identical set of boards: only boards 1 to 27 are in play.

A few further points of interest:

  1. One-section Web Mitchells deliver significantly more masterpoints than two sections. As against that, it must be recognized that the less experienced players could potentially have less access to those masterpoints, as they are competing in a more 'open' field.
  2. The one-section format is easier to set-up. You have tables 1 to whatever and away you go. With two sections, there can be some moving around required to fill the tables, and potentially a sit-out will be for 4 boards rather than 3.
  3. Various clubs use various approaches.  Kooyong and Royal South Yarra, for example, only ever have one section. Waverley, on the other hand, uses a multi-section approach (or at least they did in the past).
