First Steps Lessons
First Steps in more detail

Our 'First Steps' lessons are aimed at people who have never played bridge or people that played a long time ago and have forgotten most of what they knew!

You can read a summary of the lessons further below.

Lessons 1 - 10 are being taught on Tuesday afternoons starting at 1.00 pm.

Lessons 11 - 20 are being taught on Monday mornings at 10.00 am.

Lessons 11 - 20 are also being taught on Thursday evenings at 7.00 pm.

All of the lessons last for two hours.

Lessons 1 - 10 Description
  • Lesson one introduces the mechanics of playing bridge using a simplified version of the game called Minbridge. It assumes some knowledge of playing cards, suits and taking tricks, but all will be covered. You will learn about other bridge terms such as, 'The Declarer', 'Contracts' and 'The Dummy'.
  • Lesson two introduces the idea of Defence i.e. trying to stop your opponents from making their contract by holding them to as few tricks as possible. Opening Leads, Third Hand High play and suit establishment are all covered.
  • Lesson three focuses on  Declarer play. It introduces the techniques of leading towards high cards, taking finesses and drawing trumps in a trump contract. When playing in contracts without any trumps the concept of a Work Suit is introduced.
  • Lesson four introduces you to Bidding for a contract with the aim of reaching the best denomination. The concept of an auction and a bidding ladder are explained along with the requirements for an opening bid of 1NT and 1 of a suit.
  • Lesson five contains an Introduction to Scoring and the importance of bidding games and slams. The importance of Vulnerability is also explained.
  • Lesson six has more on bidding, when to open the bidding and the importance of bidding Games and the combined values needed for games and slams.
  • Lesson seven introduces the concept of a Bidding System and how to make logical deductions from partner’s bids. The concept of a Limit Bid is also explained.
  • Lesson eight has more on Bidding Systems and emphasises the importance of a system. This lesson demonstrates that the meaning of a bid allows us to make logical deductions
  • Lesson nine covers Limit Responses to an Opening bid of One of a Suit. Opening bids are revised as are the first responses made by partners. Limit Raise to the 3-level are introduced as well as the Invitational 2NT response.
  • Lesson ten introduces change of suit responses to opening bids and the importance of responding in a 4-card major when we have one. We also introduce the concepts of Forcing and Non-forcing bids and explain the difference in strength needed between a one-over-one and two-over-one responses.
