Rules and Bye-Laws

Membership

  1. The categories of membership are Full, Honorary, Life, Junior and Associate.
  2. Associate members are currently enrolled participants in the Melville Bridge Academy.
  3. Life Members are members who have reached the age of ninety and have been members for at least ten years.
  4. Full, Honorary and Life Members have voting rights and may attend the Annual General meeting or any Extraordinary General meetings that may be convened.

Visitors and Guests

  1. Visitors to Edinburgh are welcome to attend the club. Such visitors, who may be attending Edinburgh on vacation or business, are not allowed to play in specific club events.
  2. Members may introduce up to three guests to the club at any one time.
  3. Visitors and guests will be charged the same table money as members but will be invited to make a charitable donation to the club, which may be gift aided by signing the appropriate gift aid form.
  4. The Board may decide to let a room or rooms for the purpose of playing bridge or other activity. Persons so admitted shall be treated as visitors to the club.
  5. Visitors to the club must sign the visitors book.

Subscriptions

  1. The Board shall determine the level of the annual subscription each year.
  2. Members will be informed of the current subscription and will be expected to pay the subscription within one calendar month from receiving the information.

Table Money & Prizes

  1. Table money will be set by the Board and, if appropriate, will include a percentage to cover prize money and the purchase of master points

Behaviour of Members

  1. Members are required to exhibit correct behaviour to fellow users of the club at all times. This shall include acting with courtesy and consideration at the bridge table and in the social area.
  2. Failure to observe correct behaviour shall be reported to the Board who will be required to consider any alleged infraction and decide on an appropriate action.   
  3. The club will follow and be guided by the SBU’s Grievance and Disciplinary procedures when considering any action against any alleged misbehaviour.
  4. In sufficiently severe cases, appropriate action may include suspension of membership or a ban from attending the club in accordance with the Laws of Contact Bridge

Facilities

  1. The bar will open at times determined by the club management. A notice of opening times will be posted in the club premises.
  2. Rooms may be hired by members for private functions.
  3. Boards (including pre-dealt hands, if required) may be hired by members at a nominal charge but removal of boards from the club must be approved by a member of the Board, the club manager or the club assistant manager.

Melville Bridge Academy

  1. The Melville Bridge Academy exists to promote the teaching of bridge to members, who will be expected to enrol on a termly basis.
  2. The tuition fees will be determined annually by the Board.
  3. The Rules and Bye-Laws of the New Melville Bridge Club will apply to the MBA.

Member Participation

  1. Members are entitled to enter all club tournaments, subject to limitation of gender or Master Point ranking.
  2. Any member dropping out of a club tournament event without good cause acceptable to the Board can be banned from entering that event for a period up to two years.
  3. Any tournament prize voucher not collected within six weeks of the results being posted will be destroyed.
  4. The club accepts no liability for loss, theft or damage to anybody’s property.
  5. Members are expected to play a role in the smooth running of the club. Activities to which they may be asked to contribute include: Opening and closing of the club premises, acting as Tournament Directors, volunteering to act as stand-by partners and as partners to less experienced members.
