Convention Tips and Tricks
Roman Key Card Blackwood

Roman Key Card Blackwood

Roman Key Card Blackwood (Key Card, RKC, RKCB, 0314, 1430) is a variation of the Blackwood convention. It is used when the partnership has agreed to a trump suit and is interested in slam. A 4NT bid asks partner how many "key cards" he holds. A key card is any ace or the trump suit king.

Reverse Bids

In bridge, a reverse is a type of bid by opener that shows extra strength. Specifically, it occurs when opener is unbalanced with 16+ points  and has received a 1 response from partner to their opening bid.

Puppet Stayman response to 2NT

Puppet Stayman response to 2NT

The advantages of this convention are that it enables you to locate both 5 – 3 and 4 – 4 major suit fits AND keep the strong hand concealed.

 3C  =   “Have you got a 5 card major?”

Opener’s replies:

3D = No, but I have got at least one 4 card major

3H = Yes, I have 5 hearts

3S = Yes, I have 5 spades

3NT = No, and I have no 4 card major either

Responder’s rebids after 2NT – 3C – 3D:

3H = I have 4 SPADES* (opener chooses 3NT or 4S)

3S = I have

3NT = I’m not interested in a 4 card major; let’s play in NT

* bidding the suit in which responder has no interest ensures that opener becomes Declarer so the strong hand remains concealed.
