An Interesting Use of Doubles |
Show Detail |
This hand has some good learning points about the use of doubles.
After South opened the bidding with 1♣, two passes required East to make a protective bid. The hand is far too strong to just overcall 1♦, so East started with a double, with the intention of showing the strong single diamond suited hand later in the auction. South decided to compete with 1♠, which produced a penalty orientated double from West, indicating some values and good spades ( have you discussed what this double would mean with your regular partner after a take out double?). After North passed again (praying his partner would be quiet!), East must now properly describe his hand. A bid of 2♦ is not strong enough as West could pass, and East knows a game is probably now on. The excellent bid of 3♦ described his hand perfectly and West concluded the auction with 3NT.
There should be no way for West to go down, with no communications for the clubs after they are established.
At the other table the bidding was not as accurate and the game was not found.
