Major Suit Openings

12+ HCP and 5+ Hearts or Spades

Response to  Major Suit Opening

The first thing to tell your partner is there is an 8 card fit in the suit.

2 M - 6 – 10 HCP and 3 trump

3M - A Good 10 or 11+ HCP.  Often called a “Limit Raise” it is Invitational to Game.

3M - 8 – 12 HCP and 4 of the suit

Opener Distribution Additions once a suit is established.

Void = 3 pts

Singleton = 2 pts

Doubleton = 1 pts

Add your Shortness points to your HCP to evaluate your hand

What is your hand worth now?

What did your partner tell you about their hand?

25 – 26 HCP + Distribution to make 4 of the Major Suit

What is your response to a Major Suit bid by North?

2 Spades

10 HCP and 3 trump.  Tell your partner right way.

If the bidding continues you can mention your long minor suit.

Bid 2 Spades.  4 Trump but not enough HCP and Shortness to Bid 3.

Bid 3 Spades.  12 HCP and a singleton.  If bidding continues you can mention the Hearts.  Let them be a pleasant surprise.

Bid 3 Hearts.  You have 10 trump, but your partner may be minimum.  (Jumping to 4 Hearts is a weak responses telling partner to stop.  Save that for a later class.)

With shortness you have 14 points but the Diamonds can not go well depending on what your partner has.

What does Opener Bid next?

Pass

South is showing 3 Spades and 7 to 10 points.

Your Heart Doubleton has little value.  Missing 3 Aces.

Partner has shown 6 to 10 HCP and 3 trump.

Adding 2 points for singleton give 16.  Bid 3 H.  If partner is on the top of his bid they can bid 4.

Partner shows 10 + points and 3 or 4 Trump.

With 14 HCP and 2 for the Singleton bid 4H.

Partner had 6 - 10 HCP.  Adding 2 for the two Doubletons give 16.  Pass.  The QJ could both be losers.

Parner shows a good 3 or possibly 4 trump and 10 - 12 points.  Give 4 Spades a try.
