Response to  Major Suit Opening without major support.

1 Spade.  To an opening 1 Heart you need 6+ HCP and 5 Spades.

2 Hearts - Over a 1 Spade Opening Bid showing 10+ HCP and 5 Hearts.

2 of a Minor.  10+ HCP and 5 of the suit.

1 NT.  6 – 10  HCP and no 5 card suit.

2 NT.  11 – 12 HCP and no 5 card suit.  Invite to game if opener has extra.

3 NT.  13+ HCP and no 5 card suit.

Responses by Opener - A new suit is “forcing”.  NT is not “forcing”

2 of original major show 6+ in the suit.

3 of new suit shows 3+ card support. Let responder know you have an 8 card fit.

Over 1 NT – usually pass unless you have a 18+ HCP  Partner showing 6 – 10 HCP

Over 2 NT – Add 11/12 to your HCP and either pass or bid 3NT

Over 3 NT – If you had slam most likely original bid would have been different.

Rebids by  Responded

Bid 4 of the supported major if with distribution pair has 25+ points.  Otherwise Pass

Bid 5 of the supported minor is with distribution pair has  28+ points.  Otherwise Pass

Distribution Additions once a suit is established.

Void = 3 pts

Singleton = 2 pts

Doubleton = 1 pts

Add your Shortness points to your HCP to evaluate your hand

25 – 26 HCP + Distribution to make 4 of the major suit

28   HCP + Distribution make 5 of a minor suit.

 

Bid 2 Hearts.  13 HCP and 6 Hearts.

The new suit is forcing so you will have another bid.  No need to rush to get higher.

Bid 2 Clubs.  10 HCP and a 5 card suit.

2 NT.  Only 5 Spades so can't rebid.  Partners bid indicate there is not a Club fit.

Hearts are not that good.  Bid 2 Diamonds.

Bid 2 Spades.  Tell partner you have 6.

Bid 1 Spade.  Only 7 HCP and 5 Spades.
