Practice and Development Evening - Walsh Style and 2 Way Checkback, Friday 24 July, 7 pm. Walsh Style  : Instead of bidding "up the line" naturally, a responder holding a 4-card major and 4+ diamonds will respond; ( 1H) or (1S) if they only have a minimum hand (6-9 points). By adopting the Walsh style, the opener is free to rebid 1NT with a balanced hand (12-14 points), even if it means initially suppressing a major-suit fit. This is what our BB1 students are now learning. Learn the benefits of bidding this style. 2 Way Checkback: This is a popular bridge convention used when opener's rebid is 1 no trump. It allows the responder to clarify their hand's strength (invitational vs. game-forcing) and to search for a major-suit fit at a low level. Complements Walsh-style bidding. Moonee Valley's own Hannah O'Donnell will be presenting a short seminar on these 2 areas of bidding, followed by supervised play. Cost is $5, and all fees are donated to the Les Twentyman Foundation. Bar will be open.

The event is named after Irene English, who was a member of both the Moonee Valley and Williamstown Bridge Clubs. She was very competitive at bridge and played well into her 90s. Venue – MVBC.
