Alan dedicated a lot of his time to the club as a director, solving computer issues at crucial times, promoting bridge at the Moonee Valley Festival and serving on the committee. He was made a life member in 2003.

Bill Jacobs Seminar on  the Secrets of Pre-Emption will be held on Friday 18 October, 2024 at MVBC Clubrooms. The ultimate ‘spanner in the works’ at bridge bidding, the pre-emptive bid can cause headaches for both the pre-empting side, and the pre-emptees. In this seminar, we will explore bidding strategies for both sides to help cope with this critical aspect of the game. Don’t be like the player who gave up the game after being pre-empted once too often. Attend this seminar and learn to fight back!

Monday 28 October at 1pm.  This event is aimed at those with less than 300 masterpoints, others can play but will be ineligible for prizes. Novice players with less than 100 master points are also encouraged to enter with special prizes available for that category. The Australia wide RESTRICTED Pairs is a long standing national event organised by the Australian Bridge Magazine. This event is offering you the opportunity to play in the event and compete against a large number of pairs around Australia. $5 of the entry fee goes to the organisers who offer:

• A Souvenir booklet of the hands with the recommended bidding and items of interest from play
• A second personalised booklet, available online after the event with traveling score slips and suggestions of how you could have better scored
• A discount of $5 on a one-year subscription to Australia Bridge – Club Edition
• The top players and those with a score better than a certain % win prizes with additional spot prizes for lower ranked players and prizes for the top pairs with under 100 MP. The book, software and magazine total over $600 in value (exact prize structure will be determined after the size of the field is known)

Cost – $12 which includes the booklet of play. No registration required.

Thursday 7, 14 and 21 November at 1pm. Register and pay here no later than 1 November. The format of this year's event is expected to be a regular swiss movement with 9 rounds of 8 or 9 boards.  The exact format will be determined based on the number of entries.  The use of a swiss movement means that after the first round teams will play those who are performing similarly.  Thus less experienced players will tend to play other less experienced players. This year, the MVBC Teams Championship will be the official selection qualifier for the 2025 ABF Club Teams Knockout. Cost $28 per person. Director: Michael Halfpenny.
