George Moorhouse Memorial Shield |
George Moorhouse was a long-term member from the earliest days who conducted many tutorials for new players and also was heavily involved in the decision to and implementation of the purchase of the clubrooms. George was a skilled bridge player, who together with Tony Simpson was the club champion four times (an achievement bettered only by two other pairs). George died at a ripe old age, and at his funeral his daughter asked whether she could provide funds from his estate to have a memorial shield in his honour. At that time, there was no new event considered appropriate for the memorial shield, and the committee decided that an existing shield which had been sponsored by a now defunct local business be rededicated. The George Moorhouse Memorial Shield is awarded each year to the highest placed Mollymook pair at the Mollymook Congress.
