POSTED AUGUST 9TH
(GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS)
First the bad. Saturday’s Open Game was cancelled due to lack of participation. At this point I am at a loss to figure out how to make this game work. If anyone has any suggestions, please forward them to me. Also, if you have a reason for not playing in this game please let me know. Let’s give next Saturday, August 15th, a special effort. If you are interested in playing and cannot find a partner please contact me.
The good. We had 15 tables on the 21st. We had 16 tables on the 28th. Do I hear 17? Let’s keep adding to this game.
A gentle reminder: PLEASE play nice. For an experienced player to try to intimidate newer players is both rude and unacceptable. Please report any such incidents to the Director as soon as possible.
Hope to see a good turnout on both Tuesday and Saturday next week.
*REMINDER* - Hand Analysis & Discussion
with Martin Hunter
Martin has graciously offered to conduct a post-game analysis/discussion session following two bridge games each week, using BBO and Zoom. He’ll review the bidding, what it was and what it should have been, and even the play of the hand, using real game examples that you’ve just played.
Do not miss out on this tremendous opportunity to attend a *free* one-hour lesson with one of our very own world-class bridge players. Even if you didn’t play the game, you are welcome to attend the meeting. You are guaranteed to learn something!
The games and times are: Thursday’s 0-299 at 3:15 and Friday's 0-499 at 3:45.
Here are Martin’s detailed instructions:

Did You Know?
Have you ever had a (costly?) mis-click on BBO? Apparently, we all have. This can, of course, happen during the bidding and the play of the hand. Here’s a tip that will help to prevent this from happening.
Under the Account tab (usually on the right hand or bottom of the screen) go to ‘Settings’. Under ‘Playing’, there is a setting called ‘Confirm bids’ and another called ‘Confirm cards’ (see below). If you turn this setting on, you will have a chance to accept the bid or the play before proceeding. It only adds a second or two to the bid/play.
Confirm Bids After selecting the bid, you must click on ‘okay’ to proceed. This gives you a chance to change your bid.
Confirm Cards A single click on the selected card will allow you a chance to change your mind. The second click will play the card.
In July, at 555, we had our highest table count since January 2020 and slightly nudged out July 2019. MOBridge continues to have the highest table count in the Unit and the District and we’re #34 for all of ACBL!
In sadness, we announce the passing of our friend, Helen Trillia on August 5, 2020. We extend our condolences to Helen’s family and friends.
POSTED AUGUST 2ND
Thanks to everyone who made our July 28th Open game a great success! It was wonderful to see 15 tables. Many players, with less than 1000 MPs, stepped up, and based on the feedback we’ve received, enjoyed the game with plans to continue to play in the Open games. In addition to the Tuesday night game, we now need to support the Saturday 1:15 game.
The July 28th Open game is a good example of how stratifying works. You can see the results by going to ‘Previous Results List’ under ‘Schedule & Results Calendar’ on the MOBridge website.
There were 30 entries. BBO divided them into 3 groups of 10 according to MPs. Five pairs from each group (strata) are put into NS and 5 from each are put into EW. That makes for a fairly balanced field.
As the results show, the top scores are from group A. The top B pair received 1.36 points. The top C pair, although finishing with a slightly lower percentage than the top B pair, received more MPs, at 1.60.
Also note that four of the ten A pairs finished under 50%. They are very good but not invincible.
The message is: Playing up is enjoyable, educational and potentially rewarding.
I hope to see a good turnout Tuesday August 4th at 7:15 and Saturday August 8th at 1:15. The larger the participation the greater the number of MPs awarded. I look forward to seeing you there.
If you are not registered on BBO go to our website (MOBridge.club) for information. As well, we have several members who will be happy to show you the (BBO) ropes.
Why do the game results on our Home Page look different?
I found another program that allows us to extract more data from BBO and correct the MP results so that they align with ACBL Live. This just allows us to present the results in a similar format as we did before. It is just an enhancement. (From Cathy Kinsella)
The MOBridge site says we received .48 silver points for the game (2 times 0.24 BBO points awarded) but my ACBL account says I received 0.36 masterpoints. Just wondering why the difference?
The reason for the discrepancy is that there is a problem with BBO for limited games with two sections. BBO gives the open game points for the overalls when it should be 80% and then doubled. We have made improvements to our results and the single section and open games are accurate and aligned with ACBL. Your results for two section limited games will always be a little high (until BBO can fix it). The ACBL results are accurate and official. (From Cathy Kinsella)

POSTED JULY 26TH
We had a very successful Open Game following the AGM. Thanks to all 52 players who participated.
The Club would like to build on this success and make the Tuesday night game a regular Open Game. To sustain this change, we need three things to happen:
- Open players (BTW, everyone is an Open player) need to support this game. You can do this by both attending, as well as, encouraging and recruiting other players. At the AGM you voiced your dissatisfaction with the lack of Open Games, now is your chance to help change this.
- We need a good turnout, from what I will call, the upper average player. You know who you are! Let's go get the "Big Guys”.
- We have lots of players who are very competent but do not have as many MPs as the "Big Guys”. This is an opportunity to support your club, while improving your game. Last Tuesday the third place pair (congrats to Jay and Linda) had a 63% game. They have less than 500 points, combined. Come on out and have some fun.
Don’t forget, it’s Silver Linings week, your chance to earn DOUBLE silver points for this game.
"Send in Your Pics"
It was nice to see many of you at our Zoom AGM and clearly delighted to see each other. It’s been a long time that we’ve been apart. Please send us a snapshot to let us know what you’ve been up to. Working in the garden? Fixing a deck? Babysitting the grandkids? Family visits? Bike rides? Walks? Life at the cottage, on the links, in a park, in your backyard? We’ll take ‘em all and post them in the coming weeks.
