EMAIL FROM PAUL PORTEOUS CEO - CBAI

Dear all,

It’s the last day of summer – or so we are told! But we have had good Septembers in the past, so let’s hope this year will be the same!!

But – tomorrow marks the first day in the new Bridge Season, so welcome back to all of you!!!

A few things for you –

  1. We are having new Bridge Teachers Certification weekend on 7 – 8 October in Templeogue Bridge Centre and we have a number of potential teachers already lined up for it. If you have a member who would be interested in participating, please motivate them to get in touch with us as soon as possible, as there is an amount of preparatory work that needs to be done ahead of the Certification weekend – passing  Bidding & Card Play Tests and the preparation of 3 classes for presentation on the weekend (only one will be presented). Don’t leave it too late before contacting us.

  1. There have been some changes to the Grading System and a number of your home members will have the option of being regraded downwards. I have explained the possible changes in the attached word document, but I would point out that the option to be regraded will expire on 31 December 2017. The Club Secretary has a role to play in the process, as they will pass on the requests for regrading to your Regional Secretary, who will funnel them through to us here in Head Office. We will then reissue Membership Cards to any affected members. If any member does not take up this option, they will be maintained at the grade on the current card. We are preparing a list of those of your members who can exercise this option and will have it to you in the next week or so – so you will probably it before you get the current year’s cards!

  1. For the purpose of issuing Master Points, your Club factor shown on the bottom of the yellow Club Master Form issued now, will remain in operation for this year, regardless of members’ grade changes during the year.

  1. Duais an Uachtarain – President’s Prize.  President Jim O’Sullivan’s  prize will be held in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal (074) 9721014 on 23rd & 24th September. Open to Master & Intermediate A players, you should enter through http://competitions.cbai.ie . This is our first major competition of the season – so please give Jim and Donegal every support.

E.     CARLOW CONGRESS – the dates shown on both the Newsletter (when you get to see it) and the Diary are incorrect. The correct dates for next year’s Congress are 4 – 6 May 2018.

F.     Message from the TORC CONGRESS  - TAKING A BREAK FOR THIS SEASON!

To all our bridge friends:

We're sorry but we won't be greeting you in Killarney for the Torc Congress this 2017-2018 season. We will miss you all and hope to return for 2018-2019 season.

Every good wish for a happy and successful year of bridge.

Torc Congress Committee

Kind regards

Paul

Please Note:  The following extract is from MLR President, Ann Burns letter to all of the Club Presidents
and Secretaries in Mid Leinster Region.
Quote "There will be several new items on the Agenda and clubs will need to be fully informed on these. In addition
to the usual business of Distribution of Packs, Diaries and League Information, we will be discussing the
New Grading System, the CBAI Presidency and the training of Regional Tournament Directors." end Quote

Comment:
The Mid Leinster Region Committee have intentions of implementing a program with a  view to training up
suitable candidates to take the examination at Regional Level. (From enquiries we have made, it's not
envisaged that this exam will take place for at least the next 12months), so its hoped training - up would
take place in the meantime. Suitable candidates will already have the Competencies required at Club Level.
If  there were any member/s of Mid Leinster Region who have intentions of  becoming a Regional Tournament
Director, and would like to commit to undertake the  training. Please Contact our Regional Secretary
Blanaid Morris at 086 838 1825. or any other member of the Committee (Contact details on the main menu)

NATIONAL FUN TEAMS FORMAT CHANGE

♠                              ♣

NATIONAL 4FUN TEAMS  CHANGE OF FORMAT
In an attempt to stem the tide of a  drop in Numbers attending the National 4fun Teams
A decision to Change the format for the National 4Fun teams was made at the Governing Council Meeting in
Templeogue over the week-end. The Original format for the Competition was for the Master to play with a Novice,
and "B" with the "A". This has now been changed to the Master to play with the "A",  and the "B" to play with
the Novice. This Conforms with the way Mid Leinster Region played their 4fun Teams earlier this Year,
and more than likely will continue with that format for this years event in October Our Tournament Director
for the Regional 4fun Event is Brian Lawlor.

CLUB AFFILIATIONS

There are still 100 Clubs countrywide who have not yet returned their Membership Affiliation Forms and Fees. These were due to be received by 31 December, so I would encourage you to complete and return the forms on behalf of your members as soon as possible.

Late affiliations can be returned on the forms supplied to you on receipt of your first return, and I would remind you to include your Honorary Members in the overall return. You have honoured them within the confines of your club, but you should make sure that their membership is recorded for Insurance and Master Points purposes.

MASTER POINTS AWARDS FOR VISITORS

I would like to remind Club Master Points  Secretaries that they should record and return any Master Points awarded to visitors to the club. It is important to ensure that players are maintained in the grade appropriate to their experience.

“COUGHS AND SNEEZES SPREAD DISEASES”

This is a saying I heard in my youth – a few years ago – but it still rings true. If you have a flu or flu like systems – you should think about your fellow bridge players, whether at Club, Congress, Regional or National Competition level. They will be disappointed not to see you, but that won’t be the sentiment they will feel for you, if you share your flu with them!!

The finger will always be pointed at the person doing the coughing or sneezing!!

Kind regards (and get well soon – if that is you!)

COMMUNIQUE FROM OUR C.E.O. PAUL PORTEOUS

This email will issue to all clubs later today.

Regards to all

Paul

Dear Club Secretary or Email Contact,

Just a few notes for you this month.

1.                 2017 WBF Women’s Online Autumn Festival in association
with BBO
                                 13 - 19 November 2017 (Brochure attached)

The Online Women’s Bridge Festivals are increasingly popular and enjoyed by
many women across the world. We hope that as many players as possible will
join us for our next event, which includes many of the enjoyable robot
tournaments.

This time the exciting prize for the overall winner and a partner of her
choice will be free entry to the 2018 Women’s Pairs Championship to be held
in Orlando, Florida during the World Bridge Series, which starts on 22nd
September with the Women's Pairs starting on Wednesday 26th September.
Accommodation in a double room will also be offered to the winner & her
partner for the duration of the Women’s Pairs event.

2.                 New Rule Book – Simplified Version. As you are aware, the
WBF issued new rules this year. Up until very recently, we had been waiting
for the excellent Simplified Version produced by Mr Bridge. I am happy to
tell you that these are now in stock at a cost of €8 each. Email or call
with credit / debit card details and we can mail them out to you.

3.                 The Times Bridge Calendar – the ideal gift / prize for a
bridge player. Incorporating Andy Robson’s daily column, each day’s entry
provide a commentary on good bidding, play or defence, all of which is of
interest to any player. Written in a relaxed style, it’s more of an
entertaining book, than an actual book. Keep it beside the bed or in the
smallest room – only €15 each, now in stock.

4.                 Available regrades for members – every club received a
list of members who were eligible to be regraded downwards – if they wished.
There is a time limit on responding to this option – 31 December 2017. Any
eligible players who have not so opted, will be considered to have decided
not take up the option. So that we can process in due time – I would
appreciate it if you could let your Regional Secretary know that you have
consulted with all eligible players and they do / do not wish to be
regraded. Only a little extra work for you, but it will keep your members
happy!

5.                 Bankers Congress – not happening this year
The Bankers Congress, scheduled for March 2018, will not take place. The
Bankers Bridge Club has had to relocate to a smaller premises, the United
Arts Club in Upper Fitzwilliam Street; thus they will not be in a position
to hold a Congress in their new premises this season.

6.                 CARLOW CONGRESS – a reminder that the dates shown on both
the Newsletter  and the Diary are incorrect. The correct dates for next
year’s Congress are 4 – 6 May 2018.

http://www.xmasclock.com/ - only 47 full days  until Christmas!!

Kind regards
Paul

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS

As was stated at our Regional AGM in May, we have two Qualified tournament directors at Regional level, but of those two, one is not active.

It is important for our Region to have more trained up for the future.

It is the committees intention to set a process in motion, which we hope will result with us having the additional Regional Tournament Directors for Mid Leinster Region.  If you have people interested to become a Regional Level Director, please forward their name to our Regional Secretary Blanaid Morris (contact below). Potential candidates should have already completed the club level course, and have experience at running club level events.
