| ASK THE DIRECTORS |
Question 1. Board No. 3 NS hand of April 30th is of Interest. If your partner has an opening bid of 1 NT and you have 8 or more high card points and both a 4 card and a 5 card Major Suit, do you open using Stayman or Transfer convention?
Answer: Open with Stayman first to keep the bidding low. You can discuss the other suit later if you have 10 or more points. If you have less than 8 points, bid the transfer first.
Question 2. If your partner opens 1 NT and the opposition then bids before your turn, can you still bid a transfer? If yes, how do you do it?
Answer: This is something that should be in your partner agreement. Talk it over before play begins on how you deal with this situation. For example, if the opposition bids the suit that you wanted to bid to initiate the transfer, you can decide as a partnership that a double by you means you want the next highest suit and then the opener must announce the transfer to that suit.
You cand find more on this topic in Barbara Seagram's book, "25 Bridge Conventions you Should Know". It is in our library or a good book to own.
