With Andrew Robson as our guest of honour, it was always likely that the 2022 annual dinner of the MCC Bridge Society on 10th November would be well supported. And so it proved, with the Committee Dining Room packed to capacity.  Andrew entertained us with stories of disaster and triumph at the bridge table (including how to teach bridge to a partner who has never played before in just 10 seconds) and then fielded a host of questions from those attending. Other guests included Vivienne Brown, the newly-appointed Head of Club Services at MCC, and our tournament director Jonathan Lillycrop.

Andrew also presented prizes and trophies for the society's various competitions. From left to right, pictured are Nigel Clayton and Harvey Laurance (Lord's Trophy - Peter Darby and John Davies absent), Mike Alsford (Master Points winner for 13th time), Gary Diamond and Russell Tenzer (Rubber Bridge winners), Michael Bailey and David Mannooch (Rubber Bridge runners-up), and Simon Alterman and Jo Jarrold (Mixed Swiss Teams winners, David Alterman and Bill Coles absent).

Bridge Society Annual Dinner 25th November 2021 at Lord's

The 2021 MCC Bridge Society Dinner was held in the Committee Dining Room at Lord's on Thursday, 25th November, with a healthy turnout of 33 Members and guests for the event.  Author and journalist Robert Winder, who chairs the judging panel for the Cricket Society/MCC Cricket Book of the Year, entertained us with stories on writing about cricket and judging the work of others. He also talked about his abiding interest in how centuries of migration have shaped modern Britain, demonstrated in his book Bloody Foreigners: The Story of Immigration to Britain and by his work as a trustee of the Migration Museum.

Presentations covered our events in 2020 and 2021. Maril Silverstone presented 2021 Rubber Bridge champions Barrie Gilbert and Steve Foster with the splendid Brian Silverstone Trophy, generously given to the Club by the family in Brian's memory. Richard Cumming-Bruce took home a hatful of prizes: winner of the 2020-21 Master Points Trophy, runner-up in the same event in 2019-20, and a member of the winning team in the 2021 Lord's Trophy.

  • Master Points 3rd Place
  • Master Points Runner Up
  • Master Points Winner
  • Rubber Bridge Winners

The Committee Dining Room at Lord's was packed on 20th November, 2019 for the Annual Dinner of the M.C.C. Bridge Society, thanks in no small measure to a celebrity guest speaker - long-time BBC rugby correspondent Ian Robertson. Ian entertained almost 50 Members and their guests with tales from the world of rugby and beyond and even managed to pull off a card trick.

Other special guests were Sir Ian Magee, a member of the Club Committee and Chairman of the Membership and General Purposes Committee, and Jamie Clifford, M.C.C. Assistant Secretary (Membership and Operations). Jamie presented the awards for the Society's competitions and gave an update on an extraordinary summer of cricket at Lord's and the outlook for 2020.

Pictured on this page recieving their prizes from Jamie are (from left in each picture): Jonathan Hoffman, Gail Hoffman, Ronnie Bourne and Malcolm Green, winners of the Lord's Trophy; Pralab Barua and Geoff Lane, winners of the Rubber Bridge competion; Donald Sharpe, third place in the Master Points competition; Geoff Lane, runner-up in the Master Points competition; and Mike Alsford, winner - for the 12th time - of the Master Points Trophy.
