Cumberland vs MCC - Match Report

After two wins, MCC suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of Cumberland. The hosts were leading by 8 imps at half time and, after an excellent dinner in the newly refurbished room at the top of the clubhouse, Cumberland stretched their advantage to claim victory by 28 imps. Captain Mike Alsford managed to set aside his loyalty to MCC for this one evening, leading the home team to victory.

MCC v University Club Match Report

The MCC welcomed The University Club from New York in what we will hope will be the first of many more contests in our annual calendar of matches. The event started with a tour of the MCC prior to the match, a necessary precursor to the 2028 Olympics where Cricket will once again feature as one of the events after a gap of one hundred and twenty eight years.

The Bridge was played in friendly spirit with the home side securing a modest victory (161/68), followed by a delicious meal and joined by other members of the University club that were being rested for the day.

Dates for the away fixture which will take place in the Autumn of 2025 have yet to be finalised. Watch this space for more about the US tour.

MCC vs Athenaeum Match Report

The fixture against the Athenaeum Club on 3rd October was our inaugural representative match of the season and, in all ways, a huge success.

Against their usual strong side, MCC put on a very competitive first half and we retired for dinner at half time with a buffer of 23 imps. After a very relaxed enjoyable (perhaps a bit too enjoyable?) dinner, everyone had to be dragged back to the bridge table and inevitably they clawed back 12 imps in the second half. So MCC won a tight match overall by 11 imps.

2023-24 Representative Matches -- Won 8, Lost 5

Our 2023-24 season of representative matches is underway starting with the opening salvo against the Lords Taverners. At the halfway stage the MCC were trailing by 13 IMPS, but fuelled with refreshment, they stormed back in the second half securing an overall win by 33 IMPS. The team for the match was: Russell Tenzer, Gary Diamond, Pralab Barua, Sonel Mehta, Harvey Lawrence, Simon Alterman, David Soanes, and Ian Landau.

The second match of the season was another away match, this time against the Athenaeum. The MCC were represented by Michael Stern, Paul Filer, Charles Dixon John Davies, Jonathan and Gail Hoffman, Michael Bailey and Lester Pereira, all of who had sleepless nights wondering what happened to the elusive IMP. Yes the match was lost by the barest of margins - 1 IMP.
