MAU3A Bridge Group

Welcome to the Matlock Area U3A (MAU3A) Bridge Group. Allowing for Covid-19 restrictions, our aim is to play competitive, social bridge in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. We play "Basic Acol" at an intermediate level and meet at Matlock Town Football Club on most Wednesdays from 9.15am to around 12.15pm. Table money is £3.00 per player, inclusive of tea, coffee and biscuits.

Following the easing of government Covid-19 restrictions in August 2021, we were delighted to be able to recommence our weekly sessions. In line with U3A requirements, a detailed Risk Assessment was carried out and all Members sent a copy, this was later reviewed and the latest version may be viewed by clicking here.

However, further easing of regulations has allowed us to review our strategy again and, in February, it was decided to return to "pre-Covid" playing conditions - with enhanced ventilation to ensure the circulation of fresh air. All Members have been informed, by personal email, of the change.

Although most Members attend weekly sessions with a regular partner, we appreciate that this is not always possible. To avoid a potentially wasted journey to the Football Club, Janet Green has kindly agreed to act as a contact to match players who do not have a partner. Should you need a partner, please call Janet on 07734 347080, BEFORE 6.00pm ON TUESDAY. Members, without a partner, may, of course, come to a session (before 9.00), but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate them.

2022 Sessions

Whilst our calendar of dates for play during 2022 cannot be guaranted, we plan to play on every Wednesday, except 12 October and 28 December.

Obviously, Government restrictions, due to the Covid Pandemic, will be the deciding factor and any changes to our programme will be published here.

Frank Hemming Salver 2022

The competition for the coveted Frank Hemming Salver will be held on Wednesday, 21 September. The arrangements are as follows:

  • The competition is open to MAU3A Bridge Group members only. Members wishing to enter will need to have a partner and the partnership will need to apply by the end of August. This is because we both need to limit the number of tables to 12 maximum and ensure that everyone has a partner who will turn up on the day.
  • Play will commence at 9.15 am and continue to 12.30 without a coffee break. As such, players will need to arrive before 9 am latest to allow time for the necessary pre-play arrangements to be completed.
  • The entry fee will be the usual £3 per person.
  • Upon arrival, each pair will be allotted a table number for the first round.
  • There will be 2 board rounds and the movement will ensure a single winning pair at the end of play.
  • Our traditional summer buffet luncheon extravaganza will follow completion of play and the bar will be open for drinks.
  • The winning pair will be presented with the coveted salver over lunch. The winning pair’s names will be subsequently engraved in perpetuity on the salver.
