We all know that in most tournaments and events one is supposed to bring a system card to the table. The same should apply to on-line bridge. More often than not we only give our opponents a system summary like '5 cm, Strong NT, weak 2 in three, rev attitude and std count' or 'Benji Acol, std carding'.
When it comes to description of system, describing its structure is better than just giving a name. If you do play what is a 'bog standard' system one should believe this to be enough, but what is standard for one person is not normal for another. It would be good practice to draw your opponents' attention to any opening bid that is a bit off the beaten track (multi 2 D, Ekrens 2, Flannery to mention a few), as they might neccesitate a discussion. by your oponents to clarify a defence.
When it comes to leads and discards, try not to use the term 'normal' or 'std' as there are no 'normal' or 'standard' lead and carding methods. Try to use expression such as 'Rev attitude, 4th highest, 2nd from bad suits, Count leads, etc'.
Disclosing as precisely and as fully as possible before start of play will spead up play as well as making it a more enjoyable experience for us all.
