London Members win EBU awards 30 Nov 2022 |
At the recent meeting of the EBU several London members were presented with awards for services to bridge.

Heather Dhondy won the EBU Gold Award. Her citation (on the EBU website) reads: 'Heather has already received a Diamond Award in recognition of her playing skills. She has also been very active behind the scenes. A Board member for more than a decade, she has also chaired both the Selection Committee and the Laws and Ethics Committee, the latter co-inciding with the onset of Covid, the take-up of online Bridge and the avalanche of cheating allegations that ensued. She also served as Chair of the Tournament Director’s Development Group. In view of this incredibly wide-ranging contribution to English Bridge, we have no hesitation in presenting her with a Gold Award.' Presenting her with the award is Ian Payn, the chairman of the EBU.
RealBridge (rather the developers - Shireen Mohandes and Graham Hazel!) won the Tony Priday award in 2021, presented in 2022. When the Covid-19 pandemic started and people were flooding onto the existing online bridge platforms, Graham Hazel and Shireen Mohandes recognised the shortcomings of what was then on offer and they used their extensive backgrounds in technology and gaming to provide something that not only addressed those shortcomings but also went far beyond most of our expectations, allowing us in the EBU to run our congresses in ways that are as close as possible to their live equivalents. In doing so they have also played a real role in helping people to play social bridge, often with those in different parts of the world, and in this way they have helped them survive the worst effects of the pandemic. This award is made in recognition of the pivotal role RealBridge has played in providing a really social aspect to online bridge as well as providing serious online bridge events with greatly improved security.
Sati McKenzie was presented with the Dimmie Fleming Award for services to bridge in London, while serving on the LMBA committee.

Frank To (2.2.1949 – 27.5.2023) |
We are very sad to report the death of Frank To, who lost his long battle with throat cancer at the end of May.
Frank was a member of the London bridge association for all of his bridge playing career. He played regularly at the Young Chelsea BC almost since its inception and formed partnerships with many YC stalwarts over the years, including Ian Payn, Rob Cliffe and Ian Gardiner, after whom the LMBA London Teams of Four Trophy is named. Frank was particularly pleased to win this trophy in four consecutive years between 2014 and 2017, wins that were in addition to his three earlier victories in the same competition in the 1980s.
Frank achieved many other successes at the bridge table, including winning the Tollemache Trophy four times as a member of the London team. The first of these wins was in 1983 and the last in 2016. The gap in his bridge career was filled by his family - he took a break from serious bridge after he married his second wife, Macille, with whom he had three children – Ainsley, Christopher and Tiffany.
Frank was the kindest and gentlest of people – it would be impossible to find anyone to say a bad word about him. He will be much missed and we extend our sincere condolences to all of his family.
