Best Behaviour at Bridge

♣  Best Behaviour at Lincoln Bridge Club ♠

Bridge is a very enjoyable game, and courteous behaviour is a vital part of that. At Lincoln Bridge Club, we are committed to the principles of equality of opportunity. Most importantly, we believe that everyone wishing to play at our club should be able to do so in a friendly and welcoming environment.

This code of conduct is based on the EBU’s “Best Behaviour at Bridge”. We are sure that our members naturally follow these guidelines. However, we accept that there are occasional times when concentration and pressure can take their toll. We therefore offer this brief reminder to minimise the occurrence of such situations.

At the table

  • Be a good “host” or “guest”
  • Greet others at the start of each round, especially if you are the sitting pair
  • Give credit when opponents play well
  • Treat your partner nicely too
  • Enjoy the company as well as the game

When bidding or playing a hand

  • Ask questions only when it is your turn to bid or at the end of the auction
  • Respond promptly to reasonable enquiries
  • Try not to touch any card in the bidding box until you have decided on your bid
  • Similarly, try not to finger the cards in your hand before playing one
  • It is best to call the Director for advice if, e.g., someone has bid/led out of turn

A note about slow play

We understand that some of you need a little more time to think during a hand. That is not a problem. However, in order to ensure that we finish our duplicate sessions on time, we respectfully ask that you save any discussion about the bidding or play of a hand until all of the boards in that round have been completed (provided that the Director has not yet asked you to move to the next table).

Before and at the end of a session

We are always grateful for any help with setting up the room or tidying things away.

Enjoy your Bridge!
