Play of the Hand in the 21st Century

This eight week course is for beginning/intermediate players who want to improve their declarer play results and also brush up on their bidding skills.  Each lesson emphasizes the play of the hand from the declarer's perspective but also provides guidelines for the defense as well as some bidding reviews.  Questions are encouraged and benefit all players and will be discussed as they arise.  Topics include making a plan, developing tricks using techniques such as finesses, promotion and length, eliminating losers, and proper management of the trump suit.

WHEN: Starting April 11th (Thursdays 9 - 12)

OUTLINE OF CLASSES

Each session will focus on bidding and play of the hand strategies for both declarer and defenders.  Carefully selected pre-dealt hands are used to reinforce the concepts taught in each session.  Exercises and sample hands are used extensively in each class to reinforce teaching concepts.

1

Review of basic bidding.  Making a PLAN to bring home the contract.  Counting winners and losers, determining the contract shortfall, and developing an overall strategy to make the contract.  Guidelines for Defensive leads will also be discussed.

Developing tricks by: Promotion of high cards; by developing Long Suits; and by promotion and length combined. Defense opening leads. Bidding review.

Developing tricks with the Finesse: Leading towards high cards, repeating finesses, two-way finesses.  Defensive guidelines.  Bidding review.

Eliminating losers:  Ruffing in dummy; cross-ruffing; dumping losers on winners.   Defensive guidelines.  Bidding review.

Entry management to: Promote High Cards, Develop Long Suits,  Ruff & Discard Losers.  Defensive guidelines.  Bidding review.

Avoiding the dangerous opponent.  The hold-up and throw-in techniques.  Bidding with very Strong Hands. Defensive guidelines.  Bidding review.

Management of the Trump Suit:  Drawing trumps, delaying drawing trumps, maintaining control, establishing long suits.  Defensive guidelines.  Slam bidding.

Putting it all together -- Combining techniques and alternatives.  Review and supervised play using pre-dealt hands from the student text and other selected hands.
