Lancashire has a bridge club in most of its major towns. Several clubs have a host system to ensure you can get a game. Contact details and club times are on the Clubs page though its sensible to check before attending a new club. Clubs with beginners and intermediate classes are also listed on the Clubs page. The website has details of forthcoming competitions and results. If your club is not affiliated you may become a direct member of the EBU. This entitles you to play in all Lancashire competitions, be eligible for Lancashire Teams, and attend all Lancashire Council Meetings

The annual Manchester Congress took place last weekend with many Lancashire players involved. There were 66 pairs and 33 teams. Cros Croswell & Degsy Williams were in the prizes finishing 8th while John & Catherine Ashworth won the nonexpert prize finishing 10th. Jeff Smith with Alan Mould, John Holland & Paul Hackett won the Championship Teams.

The Preston Blue Pointed Teams was held in the new spacious comfortable premises at Preston on Sunday 14 January. There were 14 teams and the winners were Jeff Smith/jackie Pye, Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield, second Bill Alston/Colin Mitchell, Andrew & Veronica Petrie. Full results at Preston Bridge Club site
The LCBA Championship Pairs will be held on Sunday 4th Feb 2018 1:30pm at Bolton Bridge Club.
£20 per player including meal. This is a Green Pointed Event and the leading four pairs will be invited to represent Lancashire in the EBU Corwen on 2/3 June at Mercure Hotel, Daventry.

The Championship Pairs was held on 4th Feb 2018 at Bolton Bridge Club. With only 16 Pairs, TD Rob Turner ran an all-play-all 2-session Event. Winners were A Barnes & S Norris, second A Lum & D Costich, third N & S Woodcock and fourth D & D Ault. These four pairs will be invited to represent Lancashire in trhe Corwen Trophy later in the year. See results page for the full final ranks.
The Tollemache Final was held at the Mercure Hotel Coventry over the 10-11 Feb 2018 weekend. Kent won the event with Lancashire team finishing 5th of the 8 teams.The team was in contention on Sunday but sadly did not finish strongly and the heart of the team was possibly affected by a harsh adverse ruling against one pair in the last match on Saturday against Manchester. The team was Croswell/Willams, Barnes/Norris, Smith/Pye, Woodcocks and Brearley/Shine with Croswell/Williams carding the best Cross Imp performance over the weekend.
The draw for the LCBA Teams of 4 Plate 2017-8 is now on the EBU website and in the LCBA Knockouts section.
The annual Harrogate Spring Congress run by the Yorkshire CBA was held at the Cairn Hotel from 16-18 Feb 2018. The Swiss Teams event attracted 57 teams and was won by Jeff Smith & Jackie Pye, John Holland & Alan Mould. Full results available on EBU web site.
There was a healthy turnout of nine teams - Bury, Bolton A,B, Brierfield, Poulton A,B,C, Preston,Southport at the LCBA Teams of 8 held at Bury Bridge Club on 25th February 2018. The event was won by Bolton A, with last years winners Preston second, and Southport and Bury equal third. Full details in the results section. Bolton will represent Lancashire in the Garden Cities Regional Final (probably at Bradford) on Sat April 21 2018.
The Manchester GP Swiss Pairs at Altrincham BC on Sat 3rd March 2018 attracted 48 pairs. The event was very ably run by Rob Dixon and Joan Lewis. Well done to Bill Carr and Sue Woodcock who won the event, and Nick Woodcock and Sue Fjortoft who finished 3rd after narrowly losing to Bill and Sue in the last round! Congratulations to the team of Sue Woodcock & Stuart Clarke, Nick Woodcock & Sue Fjortoft who won the Cumbria Congress Teams on 11 March 2018 in a field of 37 teams. Sue & Stuart also finished 2nd in the Consolation Pairs Final, while Bill Carr and Michael Fay finished 5th in the Championship Pairs Final.
The LCBA Teams of 4 knockout competition has now progressed to the Final. The match will be between Morrell (Farr, Evans, Whittam) and Hepworth (Bentley, Purdy, Irlam) with the winning team representing LCBA in the Pachabo Cup later in the year.
Congratulations to John Morrell's team (Marianne Farr, Alan Whittam, Paul Evans) who beat Paul Hepworth's team (Rick Bentley, Brian Irlam, Alan Purdy) in the Lancashire CBA Teams of 4 Cup final. They will be invited to represent Lancashire in the Pachabo Cup on the 9th/10th June 2018 at the Park Inn by Radisson Bedford Hotel.

For the second successive year, Jeff Smith along with Dave Barton, Irving & Joy Blakey won the ManchesterHigson Cup on the 29th april 2018.
Sadly, the Madeleine Berney scheduled for Sunday 6th May 2018 has been cancelled due to lack of entries.
Following the successful Opening Event at Preston BC attended by players from across the Country, they will be running a Swiss Pairs event on Saturday 26th May. The event starts at 4pm and there will be a buffet to enjoy, plus bridge in a relaxed social setting

Twenty six pairs competed at Deva in Merseyside's John Armstrong Green Point Swiss on Sunday 20th May. Mike Tomlinson and Bob Loveridge finished in second place behind Rodney Lighton and John Currie. Full results are on the Deva web site.
Congratulations to Les Hoy & Mike Tomlinson who won the recent EBU Sims on Thursday 3rd May at Poulton Bridge Club and also won the competition nationally with 74.08% over the whole UK!
The AGM of the Lancashire CBA took place on the 21st May 2018 at Preston BC. Mike Tomlinson has taken over from Jacqueline Wright as Tournament Secretary and it was noted the excellent work that Jacqueline had done for a very long time. The new General Data Protection Act comes into force today (25th May 2018) and LCBA has published its GDPR Privacy notice on the Minutes page. LCBA have arranged a new non-expert competition – 'The County Club Challenge'. The clubs have been sent details, some have responded enthusiastically whilst others have ignored it. Please ensure your club is participating. There is also an initiative from some Preston members who have organised a Cafe bridge day for July, full details are on both the LCBA and Preston websites

Congratulations to Colin Mitchell's team (Bill Alston, Jeff Smith, Jackie Pye) who beat Sue Woodcock's team (Nick Woodcock, Bill Carr, Stuart Clarke) in the Lancashire CBA Teams of 4 Plate final.
Well played the Lancashire team that were declared winners on the day of the annual Presidents Cup on 30June/1 July 2018 held at the East Midlands Bridge Club at Derby. The competition is for North Western Counties Teams of 8, and this year there were 8 teams taking part (Hereford, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Merseyside, Manchester A, Manchester B and North Wales). The first round of NBL matches for the 2018 season were played on the 14th July at Sheffield (A), Bradford (B) and Keighley (C). The A team finished 3rd (of 6) on 63 VPs behind Manchester (68) and Yorkshire (64), The B team finished 5th (of 8) on 71 VPs and the C team finished 2nd (of 8) on 92 VPs just behind Manchester C1 on 94 VPs.Full details as usual available on the NBL site
The annual Michelle Brunner Charity Memorial in aid of Christies and St Anns Hospice was held on 21st July 2018 and raised around £1800. The winners on the day were Jeff Smith, Jackie Pye, John Holland & Alan Mould. There were 16 teams taking part. Full results on Manchester Bridge Club website
There was a full house at Altrincham for the Manchester Green Point Teams on Sunday 22nd July, including visitors from the US and Australia. The winners were the Southport team of Roger Allison, Peter Richmond, Bill & Liz Wattleworth who won their last two matches against illustrious opposition to finish ahead of Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield, Joy & Irving Blakey, with Karen McCallum, Axel Johannsson, Alan Mould and Michael Newman third. Well done to Jackie Pye along with John Holland, Jeremy Dhondy, Bill Hirst who won the Scarborough Multiple Teams held on 26th July2018 in the Scarborough Congress.
The East Lancs Bridge League season recommences at the end of August and welcomes any new team to enter the League. It currently has two Divisions with about 5 teams in each so each team plays 4 matches in the season. Players not affiliated to the EBU are still eligible to enter the League. There is an associated optional Cup knockout competition (Sarker Cup).

On Sunday 23rd September at Poulton Bridge club there is a Lancashire mixed pairs competition starting at 1.30pm. It is £20 for the day with a meal provided. On Saturday 11th August Preston Bridge Club hosted the County Club Challenge. This is a new event designed for players with an NGS of 10 or below. It was a great success everyone had a good time and an enjoyable game of bridge. The winners were Lynda Grundy and Sheila Nolan from Oakfield Bridge Club. Full results on our results page.
The second round of NBL matches for the 2018 season were played on the 11th August at Bradford (A,C),Leeds (B). The A team finished 6th (of 6) on 25 VPs. The B team finished 5th (of 8) on 61 VPs and the C team finished 2nd (of 8) on 79 VPs thus retaining their 2nd position overall. Full details as usual available on the NBL site
We are now taking entries for the LCBA Teams of 4 Knockout 2018-19 competition. There is a Cup competition and consolation Plate competition for first round losers. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners-up in the Cup competition and the winners of the Plate Competition. The Cup winners will be entitled to represent Lancashire in the Pachabo Cup on 9th/10th June 2019. The annual Cumbria/Westmoreland Congress was held on the 15-16 September 2018 at the Castle Green Hotel. The teams was won by Mike Tomlinson & Bob Loveridge, Jeff & AnnWilkins (pictured Jeff,Mike,Ann,Bob). John & Judy Brearley finished second in the Swiss Pairs. Full results on Cumbria website.
The third round of NBL matches for the 2018 season were played on the 22nd September at Bradford (A,B), Keighley (C). The A team finished 2nd (of 6) on 54 VPs. The B team finished 3rd (of 8) on 84 VPs and the C team finished 6th (of 8) on 64 VPs thus moving to third position overall. Full details as usual available on the NBL site
There were 13 Tables at the LCBA Mixed Pairs held at Poulton BC and ably run by Ken Johnston. The winners were Ian Kane & Barbara Eastabrook, with Stuart Clarke & Sue Woodcock second, Nick Woodcock & Sue Fortoft third. First Session prize went to Charrlie Colson & Roz Halliwell and second session to Ian Mckenna & Barbara Cain..

The awards will be presneted at the EBU AGM in London on Wednesday 28th November or a suitable venue of the recipients choice by a local official at a bridge club, a County AGM meeting or an EBU congress/competition.
The final round of NBL matches for the 2018 season was played on the 6th October at Bolton (A), Bradford (B), Leeds (C). The A team finished last, the B team finished 2nd and the C team won on the day. The Final positions leave the A team 5th (of 6), the B team 3rd (of 8) and the C team (3rd) of 8. The LCBA Congress was held on Sat/Sun 27/28 October 2018 with the Pairs run by Rob Turner on the Saturday at Brierfield, Teams run by Neil Morley on the Sunday at Bolton.
There were excellent attandances at both events largely due to the sterling efforts of our new Tournament Secretary, Mike Tomlinson. The pairs was won by Gary Hyett & Alan Cooke, with Jeff Smith & Andrew Petrie second, Roger Allison &Ppeter Richmond third. The teams was won convincingly by Mike Nicholson & Des King, Stuart Norris & Rod Greenhalgh, with Dave Edwards & Gillian Jones, Gareth Thomas & David Burrows in second place. There were 18 tables at the pairs, 14 Tables at the teams.
Preston BC is holding a Christmas Swiss pairs on 15 December 2018 with a 3pm start.

The Lancashire team failed to qualify for the Tollemache Final in the qualifier held at Daventry over the weekend. Nick/Sue Woodcock were the only pair with a positive CrossImp score at the end. Full results available on the EBU website.
The Lytham Rose Bowl will take place on Sunday 2nd December 2018 at 1:30pm. This is a two-session LCBA all-play-all pairs event. The entry fee is £20 per person which includes a meal provided at half time. At the recent LCBA Council Meeting, it was agreed to keep the Pay To Play County session charge at 2p which is still one of the lowest in the Country. The club levy used for many years as a player charge has been abolished, the fee for direct members affiliating to LCBA remains at £4. The affiliation fee (for those whose primary affiliation is to another county) will be £2 - currently applies to LCBA Mixed Pairs or Hector Barker Pairs).
The new Selection committee is Jeff Smith, John Brearley, Barry Brelsford & Mike Tomlinson and we are looking for new pairs to make themeselves known to the Selection committee if they wish to be considered for County matches. The Haley Trophy, awarded to the pair with the best results in the A Team NBL matches, was won by Paul Hepworth and Rick Bentley.
