Director calls slow the game down, disrupt declarer's and defender's train of thought, and often lead to a penalty on the offending side.
This section of the website contains detailed descriptions of your rights and obligations when any of the errors described below are committed.
Call the director - do not ignore the error and do not attempt to fix the error yourself.
The three most common director calls are:
Insufficient bid e.g. bidding 1♦ after an opponent bid 1♠.
This can be avoided by looking at all the made bids before you show the bid you intend to make.
Lead out of turn e.g. It is West's turn to lead first because South is the dealer, but East leads a card face up.
e.g. West ruffs but North does not notice and leads a card face up.
Both of these improper leads can be avoided by placing your lead card face down before you expose it.
If it is not your turn to lead, your partner or an opponent may stop you from leading inappropriately.
Revoke e.g. a spade is led and you have a spade in your hand but you play a heart.
This can be avoided by sorting your cards properly and checking before you play a suit different that the one led.
