Playing Bridge Online via BBO |
KILMACOLM BRIDGE CLUB ON BridgeBase Online (BBO)
Through the Scottish Bridge Union, Kilmacolm is now set up as a virtual club on BBO. This means that we are able to run our own online evenings on Mondays and Thursdays.
In order to play you must be registered with BBO and have bought some BB Dollars (BB$). This is the virtual currency used when playing on BBO. If you are not familiar with buying BB$ please see below.
Taking part in a Kilmacolm evening involves two separate steps.
1. Registering with your partner between two hours and 20 minutes before our evening starts.
2. Returning to log on a few minutes before play is due to commence.
REGISTRATION for our BBO evenings
Registration for a tournament opens 2 hours before it is due to begin (so will normally open at 5pm for a 7pm start or 5.30pm for a 7.30pm start) and closes 20 minutes before it is due to start. Both you and your partner must be online at the time of registration and have sufficient BB$ in your account to pay for entry.
To register for an evening please follow the steps below.
- Logon on to BBO – either go to www.bridgebase.com or logon using either the BBO App or the BBO Website ( www.bridgebase.com)
- When you have logged on you will see a menu down the left hand side of the screen. In the “Featured Areas” you will see an item called “Virtual Clubs”. Select Virtual Clubs then scroll down the list of clubs until you reach SBU – Scotland.
- Now click on SBU Scotland and look for a tournament called SBU_W_KLM and click on it
- You will now be invited to register for the tournament.
- You can choose to pay separately, or you have the option of paying for yourself and your partner.
- You can now log off and return a few minutes before the start time of the tournament.
Please ensure you logon to BBO a few minutes before the planned start time of the tournament. Once everybody is online the director can launch the tournament.
Only Kilmacolm Bridge Club members will be enabled to play in Kilmacolm tournaments.
Once the tournament is under way please remember the following
- Each round has a time limit and when the time is up the round is automatically ended. The system will give each pair who have not finished an Average, but this may be amended later by the Director
- If you lose your connection for any reason the Director will wait a few minutes to let you sign back on. No play will take place at your table at this time. If you are not back on within a few minutes the Director will select a substitute to play at your table until you return. If you have been substituted and subsequently return the Director will wait until the end of a hand (unless you are dummy) before reseating you at the table.
- BBO is a self-alert system i.e. you alert your own bids if appropriate. Your opponents see your explanation but not your partner.
- When the tournament is complete the results will be uploaded to our website complete with hands.
BUYING BB$
To play in SBU (and many other tournaments) you will need to buy BB$. These can bought in two ways. They can be bought direct from the BBO website or from the BBO App. They are more expensive if bought via the app.
You can buy them from the bridgebase.com screen before you logon by clicking the BB$ box in the top right or after you have logged on from the BB$ box in blue.
Both methods will take you to the next screen where you enter your BBO user name and password and then select the number of BB$ you wish to buy and whether you want to pay via Paypal or a credit card. The cost of a BB$ dollar is 80-85p
Once you have set up your BBO name and bought dollars please advise Charles Briggs (or Russell Crichton if you are a Learner). This is essential, as it will not be possible for you to register for a Kilmacolm event until we have added your details to our permitted list of competitors.
