We are saddened to learn of the death of Steve Barnfield. Earlier this year, he was presented with a silver award for his long service to Regulation and Laws & Ethics, further details in Kent Player News 2019. He was chairman of the L&E for six years and served on the committee before that. He was a referee for some years and he was also until recently the EBU pro bono advisor. He will be sadly missed and we send our condolences to his family. Steve and his wife Frances moved to Kent around 20 years ago. Steve and Frances have been part of the Tunbridge Wells team in the Corbett for quite a few years including Garden Cities win last year. They've won a few other KCBA cups recently including Arnold (2016), Hunter Cup (2017) & Gentry (2015 & 2016). His long time friend Richard Fleet has written a heartfelt obituary.

The EBU has been developing a membership campaign as we cannot rely on increasing longevity to maintain the numbers playing bridge.
The most important part of the campaign is of course the teaching of bridge to new players. The principal market for this will be empty-nesters, the soon-to-be and the newly retired. However they are the generation which has grown up with the internet and latterly social media. We need to improve our online presence to more easily direct them to their nearest bridge teacher.
We want to create a 'landing page' for these newbie's seeking to find a way into bridge allowing people to enter their postcode or click on a map to be put in touch with their nearest teacher club. There are facilities in our current Bridgewebs software to do some of this but we believe we can achieve much better through creating the landing page outside of Bridgewebs. We are therefore looking for a volunteer who could create such a webpage for us in HTML or other software.
Pilot projects in other areas conducted by the EBU have shown that a significant route to such a landing page is 'Facebook' advertising. We would therefore also welcome help from a volunteer with experience in this area.
