Trustees' Role
Trustees' Role

The following information is extracted from the Charity Commission website to explain the role of charity trustees.

Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it's doing what it was set up to do. Trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run. Trustees use their skill and experience to support their charity helping them to achieve their aims. They must be properly appointed following the procedure and any restriction in the charity's governing document.

Trustees' main duties are:-

  1. Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
  2. Comply with your charity's governing document and the law
  3. Act in your charity's best interests
  4. Manage your charity's resources responsibly
  5. Act with reasonable care and skill
  6. Ensure your charity is accountable

More detail and explanation can be found on the Charity Commission website. Says John Farmer, a former chair of the trustees "The trustees have wide ranging powers and responsibilities but we remain committed to ensuring that organising the bridge and primary contact with members are the responsibility of our elected management committee."
