Online Bridge Drives

Starting from October 7th, we will be joining with Bradford Bridge Club to run online bridge drives on Wednesday evenings. The sessions will cost £2.50 per player but for the first session Keighley members will have their table fee paid by the club, and so you can try it out for free. The cost of the session includes a contribution to EBU and so the sessions are eligible for Master Points and Magazine Points.

If you have not played online bridge yet then this should be a good chance to try among friends with plenty of help available. If you have been playing on Bridge Club Live it is an opportunity to try something different without any cost.

More details

The Tournament Director for the sessions will be Oliver Cowan, a Yorkshire bridge player with a lot of experience running online tournaments. The sessions will be hosted by Bridge Base Online (BBO) and for administrative reasons will be run through the Oliver Cowan Bridge Club, though they will only be open to members from Keighley and Bradford. The start time will be 7.30 and, at least initially, each session will consist of 18 boards. We hope to run a Zoom session after each drive where players can talk about how it went, discuss interesting hands, etc.

What you need to do in advance

Join Bridge Base Online
This is free and Wetherby Bridge Club have produced a page with detailed instructions. You will need to choose a name and it might be a good idea to choose one that will be recognisable to other club members. It might also be a good idea to get a bit of practice with playing on BBO. To do this without paying or involving other players, choose Solitaire and then either Just Play Bridge or Start a Bridge 4 Game. The bidding will be SAYC rather than Acol but it provides a way to get used to the way bidding and card play are done on BBO. You can also experiment with the settings.
Join the Oliver Cowan Bridge Club
This is also free. If you have access to Microsoft Word or Open Office then download the joining form and fill in all the fields except the signature. Then send an email with your BBO name and with the form as an attachment to oliver@hlcrecruitment.co.uk. If you have no way to edit the Microsoft Word form then just send Oliver Cowan an email with your name, your EBU number, your BBO name, your email address and a contact phone number. Also, add a line to your email saying that you agree to receive emails from the club – this is so that he can email you the results. You can see a copy of the joining form here. When Oliver Cowan replies to your joining email he will explain how you can buy credits if you want to continue playing in the drives after the first one.

If you have any questions

Instructions for joining the online drive will be sent out nearer the night, as will an invitation email for the Zoom session afterwards. If you have any other questions then email me.
