Who was Iris Charles

In the late 1940's, Hal Charles, a local doctor in the Sandymount/Ringsend area of Dublin, returning from a sick call mentioned to his wife Iris  "that patient didn't need a doctor, but someone to talk to". Iris Charles, an activist, sprung into action and with friends tirelessly brought company, support, food and social services to the older members of the community. In 1952, she founded the Sandymount/Ringsend Old People's Group, with it's main focus on visiting the elderly living alone. In 1961, the group purchased the AOH dilapidated hall on Newbridge Avenue in Sandymount and following major renovation the Old Peoples Club was opened in 1962. It was a hive of activity, with concerts, quizzes, dances, etc. and from 1967 to 2020, midday meals were provided for those in attendance.  In 1981, a new dining hall was added.  Further enhancements are continuing  to this day, through the provision of grants, donations and fund raising.  Iris remained Chairman of the Club Committee till her death in 2000, at the age of 93. Her sole wish was that the Centre continue to be utilised for the benefit of all older people, in the area and that has continued  with a fantastic team of volunteers to this day. In 1999 the centre was re-named the  IRIS CHARLES CENTRE in her honour. However, following the COVID pandemic there was a a hugh down turn in the number of people using the centre and a decision was taken to relaunch the centre once again  under its new name  Sandymount Community Centre which is now thriving again.  In 2014, the Iris Charles Bridge Club was formed  to suppot the cen tre and is happy to be a continuing source of funds  for the  fantastic Centre.
