The following notes are published in our club brochure to offer guidance to members and guests regarding our club's approach to best behaviour at Bridge.
Ipswich and Kesgrave Bridge Club is moving forward with membership increasing as new players, previous members, graduates of our own classes and experienced players, recognise that our club offers good competitive bridge. We welcome them all.
The committee's aim is to promote an atmosphere of friendly competitiveness at the table where players show each other respect at all times. We ask all members to follow these guidelines to ensure we all get the best out of our evening's Bridge.
The items below complement the EBU's Best Behaviour at Bridge initiative and aim to create a respectful attitude towards all players. In particular the Committee is anxious that members encourage beginners and allow them to develop their skills in a non-threatening atmosphere.
- Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play on each round. Be a good host or guest at the table; be a considerate partner.
- Experienced players are asked to be tolerant of infringements made by novices or inexperienced players. If irregularities occur, ask permission to explain them in a non-accusatory and helpful manner. If in doubt, refer to the Director.
- Bridge is a game that generates emotions and we are all human. But making unwanted comments to partner or opponents - whether criticism, tuition or advice – detracts from everyone's enjoyment. If you are witness to, or recipient of such behaviour, draw it to the attention of the Director.
- In the event of any confusion, misunderstanding or infringement, tell the other players that you have a problem and would like to call the Director, then do so politely, by raising your hand and calling "Director please!". It is much more comfortable if the player or pair responsible call the Director.
- Once bidding has begun, general conversations must cease, respecting all players' right to concentrate on the deal in play.
- If it is your turn to lead, ensure play progresses smoothly by leading first and recording the contract in your scorecard second (three other people are waiting).
- When dummy is faced it is always welcome if declarer can manage a "Thank you partner" – but additional comments from any players (including dummy) about the bidding or the contract's prospects should not be made.
- It is discourteous and intimidating to your opponents to detach a card before it is your turn to play. Likewise in the auction it is rude not to allow every player an opportunity to call, even when their action is expected.
- A system card is a courtesy to the opponents and we encourage their use by pairs playing unusual methods. The Director may require a pair to complete a system card when their methods differ from Standard English. It is the responsibility of all players to make sure their opponents understand their at-the-table explanations. Just a thought – having a system card improves partnership understanding!
Finally, the EBU's Best Behaviour at Bridge document notes the following:-
- Take care of your personal grooming.
- Ensure your mobile phone is turned off.
- Enjoy the company as well as the game.
- Remember that it is rude to:-
- criticise your partner or opponents in public
- be less than polite at the table
- gloat over good results
- object to a call for the Tournament Director
- dispute or argue about a Director's ruling
