Bidding is a precise business. When you make a bid, you must consider whether it has the natural meaning within the system you announced at the start of the round or it has some special meaning that needs to be conveyed to your opponents. We do this by means of 'alerts' and 'announcements'. The table below is our definitive guide. †

| Alerts of Doubles: |
- Double of NT is alerted if it is NOT for penalties. For example (1C) - P - (1N) - X is alerted if it is a takeout of clubs and not for penalties.
- Double of a suit is alerted if it is NOT for take out. So a penalty double of 2S is alerted.
- Neg Double is NOT alerted.
