Alerting and Announcing

Bidding is a precise business. When you make a bid, you must consider whether it has the natural meaning within the system you announced at the start of the round or it has some special meaning that needs to be conveyed to your opponents. We do this by means of 'alerts' and 'announcements'. The table below is our definitive guide.

Announce: Alert:
  • 1 NT range weak or strong
  • Short club (0/1/2 +)
  • 2 NT range
  • Stayman over 1N/2NT
  • Major suit transfer over 1NT/2NT
  • Weak/intermediate/strong 2
  • Canapé style
  • Strong/artificial/precision 1 club or 1 diamond
  • Strong/Benji Acol etc 2 club
  • Benji/multi 2 diamond
  • 2H/2S two suited (Lucas/Flannery etc)
  • 2N if surprising range or 1/2/3 suiter
  • Minor transfer over 1N/2N
  • Puppet Stayman over 1N/2N
  • 2S range enquiry
  • Splinter
  • Jacoby 2NT
  • 4th suit forcing
  • Unassuming Cue Bid
  • Michaels cue bid
  • Unusual No Trump cue bid
  • Lebensohl
  • Defence to 1NT
Alerts of Doubles:
  • Double of NT is alerted if it is NOT for penalties. For example (1C) - P - (1N) - X is alerted if it is a takeout of clubs and not for penalties.
  • Double of a suit is alerted if it is NOT for take out. So a penalty double of 2S is alerted.
  • Neg Double is NOT alerted.
