Here is how the bidding could have gone, playing standard ACOL

1. North opens the bidding with 2♥ which is announced by partner as "weak",  showing a min pre-empt with 6 cards in ♥ and 5-10 points
2. East is strong enough to make an overcall of 3♣, showing at least 5-card in ♣ and a good opening hand (remember you need to be strong to overcall a pre-emptive bid)
3. South is too weak to say anything so passes
4. With enough points for game, a balanced hand and a stopper in ♥, West signs off the auction with 3NT
5. All pass
6. With 3 honours, North leads the ♥A, top of touching ones.
