Here is how the bidding could have gone, playing standard ACOL

  1. South opens his longest suit 1♣  and plans to bid NT as second bid to show a strong balanced hand
  2. With a nice 5-card suit, West overcalls 1♠ 
  3. North bids his longest suit, 2  promising at least 5 cards in   and 10+ points (no need to jump)
  4. With a fit in partner suit, East raises partner ♠  to 2♠ 
  5. South asses his hand: at least 10 points from partner so game is on. With a fit in  South bids game
  6. West passes
  7. North is thinking slam with a 12-card fit in   and 6 losers in his own hand. North bids 4NT (Blackwood) asking for aces.
  8. South responses 5♠  promising 3 aces.
  9. With all aces, North is asking partner for kings by bidding 5NT (Blackwood)
  10. South responds 6  showing 1 king
  11. With 2 kings missing North signs off the auction with 6 

East leads the middle card of 3 small cards in partner's suit: ♠ 7
