Garden Cities Qualifier and Schapiro Spring Foursomes Congratulations
Garden Cities Qualifier and Schapiro Spring Foursomes Congratulations

Petersfield, representing HIWCBA in the National Garden Cities competition for county club teams of 8 champions because they won the Solent Trophy, are through to the Garden Cities final after winning at the recent Regional finals It was a strong field at Bristol with Devon, Dorset and Oxford probably among the favourites but Petersfield won all their matches and were comfortable winners in the end. Allendale, representing Dorset, came second. Congratulations to Tony Truluck, Stuart Burnett, Mike Fithyan, Steve Preston, Richard & Christine Ray,  Liz Senior and Stephen Scott. . Full bristol results here
Good luck to them in the National final where the top eight teams compete

Congratulations also to HIWCBA member Peter Crouch on being a member of the team that won the main prestigous Shapiro Spring Foursomes  event - full results here.

Bloxsom Congratulations

Congratulations to Tony Truluck, Stuart Burnett, Steve Preston & Dave Huggett winners of the Bloxsom Teams on Sunday 23rd April. 10 teams played in the all play all 9 round event, and by the start of round 9 Team Truluck were well ahead. However, second place was more closely contested. With only the last board's results to come in Team Cope N/S  thought they were celebrating 2nd place but team Smith N/S had other ideas becoming the only pair to bid and make 4S on the last board. This left all the teams in the sames places at the end of the final round as at the end of round 8 - with Team Whelan (Maria Whelan, Joe Walsh, Sean Maguire & John Moyles) in 2nd place. Full results here.

Hampshire Congress Congratulations

Congratulations to the winners of the F2F Green Point Swiss Pairs on Saturday 11th March : Stephen Lee & John England with the all HIWCBA pair of Stuart Strachan & Eleanor Rice second. The result of the rather one sided final round match between the first and second place pairs was the decisive one.. Full results here. Unfortunately the pair left quickly so there is no picture.

Steve Lee then returned on Sunday as part of Team Doye and almost took home a second trophy. when the last match was again a 20-0 triumph However, Team Pender, online raiders from Ireland, also won their last match and triumphed by a single VP. Congratulations to Green Point Swiss Teams winners Team Pender (Gilda Pender & Rebecca Brown, Kathleen Vaughan & Noreen Pender) with Team Doye (Lilias Lamont & Andrew Doye, James Clark & Stephen Lee) second. Petersfield Win Solent Trophy - Just

The Solent Trophy, the interclub teams of eight, was played on RealBridge on Sunday. 5th March. Petersfield swept into an early lead amassing 108 IMPs in the first three matches. But tea-break stalled the progress! Fittingly the last match was between Petersfield and second placed Lymington. With three boards to go, Lymington took the lead. However, a swing on the penultimate board enabled Petersfield to win by 1 IMP!. Congratulations to the Petersfield team (Stuart Burnett & Tony Truluck, Richard & Christine Ray, Steve Preston & Mike Fithyan, Liz Senior & Stephen Scott). Commiserations to Lymington (Graham Foster & Frances Alexander,Yvonne Moores & Philippa Bateman, John Taylor & Frank Price,Sue boyt & Julia Wood) who didn't lose a match, yet finished runners-up.' Pottage Semi-Final result and Candlestick Pairs Congratulations

The pottage semi-final was held on sunday 12th February. We experienced a large number of withdrawals from people who did not fancy the trip to a face to face  event in Romsey and all 16 pairs qualified. There was good quality bridge played in a good spirit. As an extra bonus for turning up face to face  the Candlestick Pairs trophy was awarded to the winners:  Congratulation to Steve Preston and Fred Hotchen. Full results here.

Yuletide, Chidwick Cup & Metropolitan Cup Congratulations

The Yuletide Teams was held in Romsey on 18th December. Ten teams enjoyed mince pies, mulled wine and afternoon tea (many thanks to Clare Fearon).. Oh, and there was some bridge. Runners up (four smaller gold coins) were Peter Crouch, Geoff Oldfield, Fred Hotchen and Bob McRobert. Non-expert/Newcomers award (four bronze coins) went to Evelyne Thomas, Steve Martin, Gary Towns and Keith Philpott,  For Full results follow the link here.

Wessex F2F Pairs & F2F HIWCBA AGM Congratulations

Congratulations to all who turned up Face to Face on Sunday 6th November.
The AGM and 2021-2022 season prize-giving was conducted successfully (Draft AGM Minutes here) and most prizes seemed to go to Fred Hotchen & Steve Preston (For a full list of winners  - see here). That and their NGS grades made them firm favourites for the main event - the Wessex Pairs. At half time it looked like all was going to plan for Fred & Steve. However...

Congratulations to Graham Foster & Frances Alexander - winners of the Wessex Pairs (full results here with Steven Martin & Evelyne Thomas in 2nd ahead of Fred Hotchen & Steve Preston in 3rd. Unfortunately, the organisers forgot to take a picture of the winners or of the earlier prize-giving.

We look forward to seeing more of you Face to Face for the Yule Tide Mini-Swiss Teams on 18th December (enter here). Being part of the wessex face to face event made the webmaster think how much nicer face to face bridge is at county level compared with its online counterpart. Hopefully lots of you will enter the Yuletide event so that HIWCBA can see the demand and plan some more face to face events in the first half of 2023.

And if you cannot wait until then and/or remain addicted to online bridge - our neighbours Dorset are holding an online teams event on Sunday 20th November - enter here.
