The objects of "The Club" shall be to provide facilities for the playing of Contract Bridge.

FINCHLEY BRIDGE CLUB

CONSTITUTION & RULES

1. The Club shall be known as the Finchley Bridge Club. It shall be non-profit making and the proprietors shall be Members for the time being.

2. The object of the Club is to provide suitable amenities for the purpose of playing bridge. The international Laws of Contract or Duplicate Contract Bridge shall apply.

3. The management of the Club and its affairs shall be entrusted to a President, a Chairman (and these two offices may be combined), a Secretary a Treasurer and a Committee of not less than 6 members and no more than 10 all of whom shall be elected at each Annual General Meeting. The Committee shall be empowered to appoint a vice-chairman from its members. Nominations, duly proposed and seconded in writing, shall be submitted to the Secretary at least one week prior to the date of the Annual Meeting, consent having been obtained from the nominees. elections, in all cases, may be by ballot. The committee shall have the right to co-opt members to fill any vacancies and such members shall have the right to vote.

The retiring chairman shall remain on the committee ex officio for one year.

4, Casual vacancies among the Officers and Committee shall be filled as follows: President by the members at an Extraordinary General Meeting called for that purpose. Other officers and Committee Members by the Committee

A casual vacancy shall not in any way invalidate the proceedings of the Committee.

5. The Committee (on which the Officers shall serve ex officio) shall meet as required and not less than twice annually. Five members or Officers shall form a quorum.

6. The Committee has power to

(a) Appoint sub-committees and delegate to them such of their powers as they deem fit, the overall responsibility remaining at all times with the committee.

(b) Make such bye-laws and regulations as are not inconsistent with these Rules, a copy of such bylaws to be displayed in the Club.

(c) To reserve any room of the Club for any purpose this does not conflict with these Rules.

(d) To determine all charges other than the Annual Subscription

(e) To employ and control staff as may be required.

7. A copy of the Accounts drawn up for the year ending 31 December shall be circulated to Members.

8. The Annual General Meeting shall be held in December each year and shall be called by written notice sent to each member at least two weeks before hand. The quorum at all general meetings shall be 15 members.

9. Election for post may be by ballot if necessary. Written proxy vote for elections and motions will be accepted. They should be in writing and enclosed in an envelope marked “proxy vote”. Members unable to attend may note but such votes must be made in writing and be with the Secretary 24 hours prior to the meeting. Ballot on any motion may be required by not less than 5 members. Any resolution or motion shall require a 60% majority of members voting in order to be enacted.

10. Applications for membership shall be submitted to the Secretary who shall arrange with the Committee for the applicant to be played in. New applicants are welcome to play a few times before being offered membership.

(a) Overseas visitors will be offered a holiday membership for a maximum of six months at half the annual subscription.

(b) Any member may address the Committee in confidence regarding an applicant.

(c) The Committee shall have the power to elect, Temporary, Honorary, Associate and Life Members who may receive notice, attend and vote at all General Meetings.

11. The Annual Subscription shall be fixed at a General Meeting and shall be due for payment in January. There shall be an Entrance Fee to be determined by the Committee from time to time.

12. Guests may be introduced into the Club not more than 6 times each year and their hosts shall be responsible for their table money. Members of other Bridge Clubs may be admitted upon payment & the usual Visitors Fee at the discretion of the Secretary. The name of the Visitor on every occasion shall be entered into the Visitors Book, together with the name of the introducer.

13. If the conduct of a Member appears to be injurious to the character and interest of the Club the committee shall have the power to admonish, or exclude such member.

14. Members who leave their property on the Club premises do so at their own risk.

15. Proposals to amend any Rule must be submitted in writing to the Secretary not less than four weeks before the Annual General or Extra Ordinary General Meeting call for such a purpose. The Committee shall place the proposals before the General Meeting with or without recommendation. The proposed amendment shall be approved if two thirds of the Members present and voting shall vote in favour.

16. In event of the dissolution of the Club the properly and assets of the Club - after discharge of all liabilities and expenses - shall be distributed to various charities (principally The North London Hospice, 47 Woodside Avenue, London N12 8TT a charity registered in England & Wales number 285300 - or other charities as deemed appropriate by the committee).
