The Trophy was first presented to the winners of a Teams event and subsequently a Pairs event at the Harpenden Bridge Club. In the thirties, Welwyn Garden City and the Harpenden Bridge Club were affiliated to the British Bridge League. Circa 1938 they joined together to found the HBA. It was then among the first counties to be affiliated to the EBU.

The cup was ‘lost’ in 1950 but was resurrected in 1960 and from there on presented to the winners of the HBA major Pairs event.
