Hint of the Month

North-South reach 4  after the following auction. Can you plan the play?

West leads 10♣

Plan declarer play (Note that your trump suit is of poor quality).

Count your immediate tricks:- 2 spades, 1 diamond, &  2 clubs

Where will the other 5 come from?  Possible plans could include:-

  • Setting up clubs in dummy
  • Ruffing 2 spades in North
  • Taking the diamond finesse
  • Cross-ruffing diamonds and clubs.

More clues will come from counting losers. Even without seeing the East / West cards you can count two possible trump losers, one diamond if the finesse fails and one club. Can any losers be avoided?

  • The diamond loser could be avoided on a successful finesse (this works)
  • And one heart loser could be avoided on a successful finesse (this fails)
  • The club loser can be thrown on winning a diamond. This works even if the finesse of diamonds fails.

Execution of your Plan

  1. Win club lead in South
  2. Finesse diamonds – succeeds
  3. Spade to the king
  4. Take the heart finesse – fails
  5. Win any return and throw one club loser before removing trumps
  6. Cash out for 11 tricks.
