There are two good excuses for not leading the suit your partner opened:
having no cards in the suit, and sudden death.

Bidding |

Stayman |
The Stayman bid should be used in response to a NT opening by partner if you have 11+HCP and a 4-card major to see if you have a 'Fit' in any of the Majors. If you have 5+ card Major you should use Transfers.

Transfers |
The use of Transfers is predominately used to make sure that the stronger hand in the partnership plays the contract. They can be used as a weak takeout or to better describe you hand when you have a 5+ card Major or a 6+ card Minor.

Losing Trick Count |
When you have found a 'Fit' for a suit contract, you can use the Losing Trick Count (LTC) to accurately determine what level of contract you should be in. The LTC is an alternative, and more accurate method than using High Card Points to gauge the contract level.
