BBC Children In Need Sim Pairs 2020

Monday 9th November

Simultaneous Pairs - Played on BBO

10.15 for a 10.30 start

Please join us again this year to raise money for Children in Need but this time it will be on the BBO platform. Just login and play as usual in our regular Monday morning session.  Visiting pairs are welcome - details below.

The table money will be £5.00.  If you do not wish to pay this additional amount please let Ron know as he is accounting for the money. The EBU are waiving their fee, so a large proportion of the table money will be going directly to CIN.

Due to the current circumstances we will not be able to hold our usual raffle which would normally generate a large amount of money, so we hope that as many of you as possible can join Barry and Rob playing online for this special event.

*** Members who are not playing but wish to donate
can do this via the EcatsBridge website and the amount will be added to the club total. The link for this is where you will find all of the details on how to make a donation. Don't forget to give the club name and that the payment is for Children in Need.

*** Visiting pairs
are welcome to join us but we require the following information for each person:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • BBO name
  • EBU number (if you do not include this then master points cannot be assigned).
  • Location / County

Please email the details to Judy Cope well in advance as we will not accept non club members on the day.

To find out how you have done

The club's results will be uploaded to ECatsBridge. Here you will be able to find out your ranking at HBC and over time, as other clubs send in their results, the nationwide results.  The results will not be available on the club's website immediately after play as the same hands will be played by other clubs throughout the day.
Click on the link:  ECats results page .

*This event is run in conjunction with ECatsBridge.  They are also an official partner of BBC Children In Need because of all the money they have raised in the past.  *

Club Notices

Online Yorkshire Sunday League

Yorkshire had an entry of 128 teams for its first Online Sunday League competition, so these were divided into 16 divisions of 8 teams.  Harrogate entered 5 teams, placed in Divisions 1,2,7,8 and 13.

We were very relieved that all our players managed to log on at 2 o'clock playing the correct opposition!

Two matches were played, one at 2.00pm and one at 4.30pm.

The Harrogate  results were as follows:

Div 1 A 4 v Sheffield B 16
  A 15 v York A 5
Div 2 B 6 v Huddersfield B 14
  B 4 v Leeds C 16
Div 7 C 2 v Thirsk A 18
  C 5 v Leeds G 15
Div 8 D 6 v Leeds H 14
  D 18 v Garforth B 2
Div 13 E 16 v Bradford F 4
  E 10 v Bridlington 10

Full league details and results can be found on the YCBA website click here.

The remaining dates are:
1 & 15 November
6 December

Considerable organisation was involved so thanks to Catherine for circulating all the necessary information to our teams, and to team captains for sending in results so promptly.

Questionnaire Responses

There have only been responses from 90 of the 297 members. Of those responses 100% were in favour of the plan, 50% wished to return to the club as soon as possible, 23% wanted to wait until they felt more confident and 27% wished to wait until there was a vaccine or the threat diminished. There is still time to contact Kath with your views.

If we are to open later in the year we will need volunteers for key jobs: TDs to run sessions using the computer, uploading results to Pianola, dealing cards using the duplimator, acting as a Steward, booking agents. Training is available for jobs involving the computer.

EBU Upcoming Virtual Events Newsletter

October 2020

As October is fast approaching, we would like to keep you informed of the range of competitions taking place over the next few weeks.

National Handicap Pairs

The National Handicap Pairs will now take place online this Sunday 4th October, the competition format will remain the same. The special thing about this competition is that the results will be adjusted by the average of each pair’s NGS grades, so everyone will have a chance of winning simply by playing better than usual.

You can play in one of the club heats or in the national heat hosted by the EBU.

For a full list of clubs taking part and for more information, click here.

Autumn Congress

The Autumn Congress will now be held on RealBridge on 23rd - 25th October

RealBridge is a new online bridge platform currently undergoing extensive testing among clubs and national organisations across the world. Its most distinctive feature is that it uses your computer's camera and microphone (if it has them) to provide video and audio of the players at the table, aiming to replicate the experience of playing face to face. However, players without that capacity will still be able to play by typing comments in the traditional manner.

In preparation for the Autumn Congress, we are offering a number of short (six boards) free games on RealBridge this week to give people the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the playing environment before the event.

The free games will be on Wed/Fri at 7.45pm and Tue/Thu at 6.15pm. If you would like to play, please reply to this email and you will be sent details about joining the games.

For more information about the Autumn Congress, click here.

HBC Online Duplicate Sessions

Our club online sessions have now been running for nearly 2 months.  Times of sessions and results are on the right hand side of the website and a resume of scores is under Competitions 20/21 on the left.  There were initially some small hiccups but sessions are now running smoothly and efficiently. Huge thanks to Barry Whiteley and Rob Cave for all the work they put into this.

We do still wish that we could encourage more members to take part.

I was quite apprehensive at first but now find it relaxing and enjoyable.  PLEASE do contact me (or Helen, Rob or Barry) if you would like to give it a try and we will answer any questions or have a game with you.

Yorkshire (YCBA) has organised several events in which some of our members have played.  There was a Swiss Teams which attracted 118 pairs and a Mixed Pairs which had an entry of 70 pairs.  All Yorkshire competitions will be advertised on this website.

Also the EBU runs 8 sessions each day with entries ranging from around 30 to 80 tables.  Shelagh and Catherine have played regularly in these and are to be congratulated on achieving a score of 71.5% last Friday, finishing 2nd in a large field.

Obviously we would ideally like to return to playing in the club and we shall inform everyone of plans for this when it becomes a possibility.

Playing in EBU games on BBO:

The EBU are now running daily sessions on BBO, afternoons and evenings, and awarding master points.  Further information on these games can be found by clicking here.

We are a welcoming and friendly bridge club catering for players of all standards.  We run seven pairs sessions per week and a supervised play afternoon for those who want to practice before they step up to duplicate.  We also have classes for beginners and intermediates, and occasional instruction on specific topics.

Visiting pairs are always made welcome.

For the more competitive players we have five teams in the Yorkshire Sunday League.   Many of our players also group together to make teams of four that play in the Harrogate and District Bridge League against more local opposition.

Harrogate Bridge Club is located in the centre of this beautiful spa town.  The club has its own private premises and is well established with over 250 members.  In addition to our playing areas, the club has a kitchen and a licensed bar.  HBC is a member of the English Bridge Union, EBU, and the Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association, YCBA.  We use the Bridgemate wireless scoring system so that results are updated as you play.  Hand copies of each session can be taken away and are also available once the results are posted on the website.
