BRIDGE ETIQUETTE
“ To Ensure A Good Time is Had By All”

As a private social bridge club we, Happy Bidders Social Bridge Club, can control the flow of bridge players, i.e.: any rude, ill-mannered and unpleasant behavior will not be tolerated. Please let us know if you experience any unpleasant behavior from players. We want everyone to enjoy the evening and we will not let bad behavior ruin that for one or all of us.

♠    Players are expected to conduct themselves in a civilized manner. All good players strive to ensure that their bridge ethics are impeccable.

♥    A player should at all times maintain a courteous attitude. A player should carefully avoid any remark or action that might cause annoyance or embarrassment to another player or might interfere with the enjoyment of the game.

♦    Never try to “teach” at the bridge table. Never let a harsh word pass your lips and you will be sought after rather than a shunned partner.

♣    Fumbling, hesitating, Psych bidding or any unacceptable deception is considered cheating. You must not try to mislead opponents. There is “Zero Tolerance” for unsavory behavior of any kind.

♠    You are to convey messages to your partner by what you bid, not how you bid it. Never show your partner any facial or body mannerisms that indicate displeasure with a bid. You will lose both your partner’s and your opponents respect.

♦    Even if you know what card you are playing next don’t pull it from your hand until it is your turn to play. It is an information giver.  Experienced players can figure out what’s in your hand easier when you do this.

♣    Keep a “poker” face. Sighs & groans when you have a poor hand gives the opponents a good deal of information as to where the good cards are and it is considered to be poor manners.

♠    When you are the dummy don’t lay down your hand until the opening lead has been made. Also, don’t pull a card to be played until the Declarer has called for a card.

♥    “Thanks partner” is always a nice comment when the dummy is exposed.
“Good luck partner” is always nice as a response.

♦    In a regular duplicate game you are expected to take 7 minutes per hand. Although there is no stop watch on the table at a social bridge game you are still expected to play at a reasonable pace.

♣    Do your paper work IE: fill in your personal score sheet after you have made your opening lead so the dummy can lay his hand down and the declarer can take a minute or 2 to make his/her plan of play. This helps to maintain a nice flow of the bridge game.

♠    Please socialize after the hand in a quiet fashion as some players are still concentrating on the play of their hand. Our bridge room can get noisy. If you are finding it exceptionally noisy just ring the little bell.

♥    Always greet your opponents when they come to your table. Good manners and politeness means so much to the enjoyment of the game.

Hopefully this is helpful. If at any time you have suggestions for improvement of our Social Bridge Club please let us know.

Thanks
