General Information

Halifax Bridge Club was established in 1950, and is run by its members, for its members. It has its own premises providing regular duplicate bridge sessions. It is a member of the English Bridge Union and Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association (YCBA) and the majority of the club events generate EBU masterpoints and count towards NGS Grades. The club has its own online presence running 3 online sessions a week. In addition to a comfortable playing area, the club has a spacious kitchen, and there is ample free on-street-parking after 8pm. The Club competes in the Yorkshire Sunday Teams League.

There are bridge sessions each weekday evening, see "Where and When" in "Information" in the menu.

Visitors are most welcome at all times, but those intending to come on their own should note the hosting system days and times.

All evening events commence promptly at 7pm and end at approximately 9.30 pm. Duplimated boards are used for F2F and scoring is facilitated by the BridgeTab system and EBUScore, providing members with a competition result within minutes of the end of a session. A comprehensive breakdown of results is posted on this website.

Annual subscription is £20.00 which includes automatic membership of the English Bridge Union (EBU) and Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association (YCBA), members also pay £3.00 table money. (Visitors pay £4.00).

Various member' competitions, for individuals, pairs and teams, are held annually. Dates can be found on the Events Calendar page.

The Club holds a beginners course in association with Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association (YCBA) which starts at the end of each September.

Bridge Session Descriptor
Beginners F2F (8 to 12 Boards) These sessions are aimed at people who are doing Lessons, want a refresher, or are coming back to bridge, and are intended to provide practice with help where needed. Teaching assistants play for free. Lessons (optional) are provided via a video that you can watch at home in your own time. These sessions are hosted, so players don’t need a partner, but you can come with a partner if you'd prefer. The sessions are scored and it’s fine to use crib sheets etc. There are no Master Points or NGS.
Improvers F2F (12 to 16 Boards) These sessions are aimed at less experienced players to help them make the transition from beginner to regular duplicate sessions, with the opportunity to discuss the bidding and play on difficult/unusual hands. Only simple systems are allowed. Experienced players can play for free if they are partnering a less experienced player. These sessions are hosted, so players don’t need a partner, but they can come with a partner if they'd prefer. The sessions are scored, but there are no Master Points and NGS.
Social 18ish F2F (15 to 20 Boards) These sessions are aimed at intermediate players. The session aims to increase the confidence of players, so they feel more equipped to play in other more competitive sessions. Normally, 18 boards at a relaxed pace. There are no specific restrictions on conventions but typically only a small range of standard conventions are used. These sessions are hosted, so players don’t need a partner, but they can come with a partner if they'd prefer. There are Master Points and NGS.
Social 24ish F2F (20 to 25 Boards) These are mixed ability session which provide reasonable progression beyond the Social 18ish sessions. Players are expected to play at a reasonable pace. These sessions are hosted, so players don’t need a partner, but they can come with a partner if they'd prefer. There are Master Points and NGS.
BBO Online Social (20 to 25 Boards) These are mixed ability sessions, 7 minutes per board (so a 4 board round would be 28 minutes). These sessions are not hosted, but you can put yourself in the partnership desk, ask someone who is already in the partnership desk to be your partner, or play with a robot if there is a half table. The sessions are scored and you can use crib sheets etc. There are Master Points and NGS.
Competitive 24ish F2F (20 to 25 Boards) These sessions are aimed at the Club’s strongest players and those wishing to challenge themselves against the better players. A wide variety of conventions will be used, and bidding and play can be challenging to less experienced players. Anyone is welcome who is comfortable playing at a reasonable pace and bidding against a wide range of conventions. These sessions are not hosted, so players will need to come with a partner. Normally 24 boards at 7 minutes per board (a timer may be used). There are Master Points and NGS.
