Help & Guide
Release 2.19r
21.4 Domain

Bridgewebs is one giant online web site with the information kept in databases and pages built dynamically as required. As such there isn't an individual web site for each club and the normal methods of setting DNS etc. do not apply.

However, it is possible to have a registered domain name that can be used to point to your web site home page. You may also need a domain to allow you to register emails.

There is a recurring cost for domains. The domain providers have made it much easier to do it yourself, so Bridgewebs no longer registers domains for clubs. AND, there is no difference in operation. For example, the Bridgewebs host, 123-REG provides domains and these days it is a fairly easy task to do yourself and little difference in cost. There are many others, www.godaddy.com

If you have already registered a domain, the first task is to log in to your to domain control panel and set "Web Forwarding"

You can check where your domain is registered using www.whois-search.com/

Web Forwarding

  • Choose "Permanent Web Forwarding" or "301 redirect"
  • DO NOT use "Framed Forwarding" as this makes bridgewebs incompatible with cell/mobile phones
  • Set the forward to e.g.. "https://www.bridgewebs.com/birmingham" ( use https if available, otherwise bridgewebs will automatically switch to https)
  • That is it, you may then need to wait up to 12 hours, usually quicker.

If you would like to administer the domain yourself and use the Bridgewebs host 123-reg then go to www.123-reg.co.uk

Emails

If you administer your own domain, you can also have your own email addresses. There are 2 types

  • Email Forwarding (Usually Free) - Enter an email such as secretary@brirminghambridge.co.uk and the email address of someone to forward the email to. This technique means you can easily change the recipient if there is a change in committee.
  • Mailbox (Charge) - A full mailbox that can be used to send and receive emails.

Email Solutions have also changed considerably over the years and Bridgewebs simply cannot keep up with all the services

One that we have tried and is easy to use, allows multiple emails to be managed with one master email and provides statistics is www.zoho.com/mail/. This is one that we are familiar with and can provide support.
