These days, it is generally useful to put a link to a map site on your web site. Sign into administration, click on ‘settings’ and ‘site details’. This allows you to enter details of where your club is.
If you enter a Postcode for the venue , Bridgewebs will create an appropriate link on the "Where & When" page and similarly show this on the "Find Us" page. This is usually close enough for players to find you. Bridgewebs uses the Google Mapping programs. Find a map of your area, click on the club’s precise location and you will see in the top bar following www.google.co.uk/maps/@ the coordinates of your club. You can also use this as a link on your web site.
Alternatively, if you have a drawing or map as an image/picture, then upload it to the Picture Library and select it, which will be used on the "Find Us" page.
Then, enter some text as well, which will be inserted beside the map
Recent features of Google allow maps to be built dynamically. This feature has been incorporated into the "Index of Clubs" and "Find Us" pages to allow users to find the location of clubs more easily, either to play at or, if you are building your own Bridgewebs site, someone locally who can help with ideas.
The mapping sites generally work by searching by Postcode/ZIP Code. This uses the various Post Office/National supplied Postcode/ZIP codes/Address tables which provide a cross reference between the postcode or address and an absolute International coordinate of Latitude and Longitude. The coordinate is generally the Centre of all the addresses in that Postcode. This is usually close enough in densely built urban areas, but can be markedly different in rural areas. Bridgewebs will accept a Coordinate of Latitude and Longitude and use that to create a map. The advantage of this is that even though some places do not have a postcode, every place on earth has an accurate position given by Latitude and Longitude.
For efficiency and accuracy, the general map provided with the "Index of Clubs" and "Find Us" is created from coordinates. You can specify the coordinates for your location in the "Web Administration" -"Settings" - "Site Details".
In the site details, there are 2 links. One link is for translating the Postcode to a coordinate, use this, then cut and paste the coordinates back into Bridgewebs and [Save]. Then, use the other to link to Google to check the accuracy of the coordinates and fine tuning. Note: Latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere are negative and Longitudes West of Greenwich are negative. You need to get the sign correct, otherwise your location may end up in the middle of the Pacific.
Tip: To find the coordinates of your club venue, click on Google Maps, use whatever searches to find roughly where this is on the map. Zoom to maximum with the + button, move the mouse over where you think the club venue is, then "Right Click" and click "Get directions to here" and it will put the coordinates in the "Start Address". Repeat as necessary to get it as accurate as you would like, then, cut and paste these into Bridgewebs.
For example, looking up the EBU Headquarters by postcode HP19 8AZ gives 51.820709, -0.831733 but this gives a pointer to the wrong side of the road. You can experiment and adjusting this to 51.8221, -0.8295 gets you get closer to the actual location of the EBU Headquarters. A change of .00001 is approximately 1 metre/yard.
